Mule deer???

If you guy's were going to go on an unguided public land mule deer hunt what state would a couple of complete rookies have somewhat of a chance of number #1: drawing a tag and #2: getting a chance at something worth mounting?
I have looked at every state that support's mule deer and I'm still unsure of where to go.Neither one of us has ever hunted them and we are not sure on wether to hunt low elavation or up high in the mountain's.I've seen that they can be taken in the lower areas but I would think it would be tougher to find ground to hunt down low.
If anyone has ever hunted these guy's any help would be appreciated. We are hoping to give it a try next year.
Also does anyone know of any good link's to mule deer site's?

Utah!!!

They do have a draw system with preference points for rifle hunts but I think it is fairly easy to buy bow tags over the counter as a non resident. I believe it would be an August hunt for bow so you would be hunting high elevations and patterning the bucks movements.

I think you could get a non-res tag here pretty easy. Some of the western units with mule deer don't even sell out all of the tags. Only problem is that there are limited amounts of public land in the western half of the state where the mule deer are.

Not to mention Utah is a beautiful state, we rode bikes out to Kanab this summer and it was awesome.

NebraskaWhitetail is right. A non-resident tag is only $175. I am from southwest Nebraska originally and there are a lot of Mule Deer out there but the chances of shooting one the same caliber of Utah is slim. There are a few taken each year. I took one around 150" this year and we have about 6000 acres to hunt but other states have bigger and more of them. The only real public ground around sw nebraska is around the local lakes and they are usually full of hunters if you are rifle hunting.

I would take a hard look at the Black Hills in Wyoming. Anywhere around Hewlett or Sundance Wyoming. There is a lot of Public Land around these two towns, loaded with whitetails and Mule Deer. You will see more whitetails than Mulie’s in these areas, but the Mulie Bucks you see will be wall hangers.

Good Luck!

Montana can be great! No pref. points and about 20% odds for drawing a tag. 100% if you prefer an outifitter tag. We saw/passed a lot of Muleys in the 140-150ish range and my in-laws both shot decent bucks towards the end of the hunt.

Thank's for the info everyone! Those are what were looking for Dor,Great buck's guy's!
We are still unsure of what were going to do but we'll figure it out.Believe it or not we are leaning toward South Dakota, the S.W area or the N.W area's.Does anyone know how hard the draw is for those zone's?It sound's like there's going to be 3 of us trying to get group tag's.
Again thank's for the info guy's.

Are you planning on hunting with a bow or a rifle. If you are hunting with a bow, you are guaranteed a tag. Drawing a tag with a rifle will be tough to do in either of those counties. Good Mule deer and some good whitetails as well. Tons of public ground. What dates are you planning on hunting?
