Crossbow Hunting of Deer Likely to be Legalized

6/16/2009

New Jersey’s Fish and Game Council will more than likely approve a measure allowing crossbows to be used by hunters of all ages in all open bow deer seasons on June 16.

So far, the crossbow regulation has cleared the technicalities in its way by removing the prohibition on all draw-locking and draw-holding devices and by including crossbows. All crossbows used must comply with the standard of stocks at least 25 inches long and minimum draw pull weights of 75 pounds.

"The shoulders start going bad in the 40s and 50s, and you have this big drop-out rate of bow hunters,” Leonard Wolgast of the Fish and Game Council told the Star-Ledger News. “There are virtually none left who are in their 60s."

Currently, crossbows are only legal for handicapped hunters to use with a permit, but the FGC found that 73 percent of resident deer hunters supported the expansion of crossbow use.
