Very nice JLC!
I love pistol hunting as well, its right up there with bow hunting. 41Mag in a Custom Blackhawk and 357 Maximum (0.3" longer than the 357 Mag) in a TC single shot.
Best whitetail single shot pistol round (IMHO) is the 300 Whisper with a Nosler 125 BT or 130gr Hornaday SSPB. It's legal in IL but not here. I would do the happy dance if they ever changed the regs. The farthest I have ever had a deer go after being tagged with this round was 8 steps (boiler) and it's spooky accurate. Zero steps with a neck shot are the norm.
IL regs read as follows for bottle necks:
Case length less than 1.4 in length"
500ft/lbs of energy produced at the muzzle
Produced in a factory round with published data (no wildcats).
The above rules also permit the 30 Bellm another fantastic single shot pistol round. Just has a bit more bark than the Whisper.
I know of no other rounds that these regs will permit. Wish we could get them adopted on this side of the big creek. They would still have a shorter range than the current modern muzzle loaders. The 300 Whisper is about a 100-125 yard round with a good scope and a solid rest. 30 Bellm can be stretched another 25-50 yards with the same.
Anyone know of someone with the state, that these regs could be bounced off of? Wish they would be considered.
Who else here pistol hunts? It's a nice challenge and very rewarding...
