South Dakota Meat Donation Program Reaches 97,000 Pounds
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) The Sportsmen Against Hunger program says hunters in South Dakota donated about 97,000 pounds of meat -- mostly venison -- for South Dakota food banks to distribute to the needy.
The nonprofit program reimburses meat processors for their costs to process deer and antelope donated by hunters. Some hunters also donate the meat and pay the processing costs.
Program officials say donations last year were 2,290 deer, 408 antelope and 5,929 pheasants, enough to provide meat for 390,000 meals.
