Oregon Ranchers: Eliminate Sheep-Killing Wolves
Ranchers in Baker City, Oregon, have asked the state Legislature to allow the tracking and killing of wolves that damage livestock.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed last week two wolf attacks on sheep.
Since the increase in wolf population due to federal protection, wolves have expanded their range in the West. The Oregon wolves are reportedly from Idaho.
Federal protection of the wolves will expire on May 4, but the predation has prompted ranchers to lobby for increased wolf control.
After Oregon reversed laws to return Idaho wolves, the Baker County Board of Commissioners anticipated the livestock attacks, said Fred Warner Jr., commissioner chairman.
The ranchers have until Friday to get a committee hearing for House Bill 3383.
