Shimek Forest

I am considering bow hunting in the Shimek Forest in zone 6 this fall. I've never hunted here, but I've heard good things in general about the forest. If anyone has any tips on where to concentrate my efforts or areas of the forest to avoid that might have a lot of hunting pressure it would be greatly appreciated. I plan to head down for a weekend in April to scout and pick out a few spots for this upcoming fall. Thanks again for your help.

My only advice for public ground, is walk until you are sick of walking, then walk an extra ten minutes if the place is big enough

I have hunted quite a bit of public and have only ran into a couple of people who actually knew what they were doing, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I wouldn't hunt field edges, seems like there is always some yahoo running around at every hour of the day

I have never hunted Shimek forest but I know that it is well known which would make me scared to go there. I would be checking out the smaller areas that aren't as well known if it were me

What unit are you looking at hunting?

Croton, Farmington, Donnellson, Lick Creek, or Keosauqua?

I'm not tied to one particular area, just as long as it's in zone 6 since that is where my tag will be (hopefully). My inital thought was to check out the Keosauqua unit first, but having never hunted this area before if there's one area that stands out as being better than the others I will concentrate my time there. It is a BIG,BIG area and I know it sounds like the 4th of July during turkey season over that way. I've never found anything but boot prints while shed hunting, but a tract that large has to have potential somewhere?

looks like a nice place when I drove by it.I saw a truck parked there with new york tags.That was nov 9th of last year.
