Summer Coats

Summer Coats are starting to disappear on some of the big boys.

Last night I watched a bean field with about 10 deer in it. What really caught my eye was one deer the was twice as big as all the rest of the does and younger bucks.

His coat was already gray. Then he lifted his head and looked my way......holy S$@#!!!!!!

I had fun watching him for about 20 minutes before he made his exit.

Anyone else starting to see the bucks coat color changing?

I saw something similar this week, I saw 4 bucks in a bean field at 2:30 in the afternoon... The biggest was a mid 150's that was real grey...

Our time of year is getting closer!!!!!

Mark...

I have noticed that the more mature bucks are starting to turn real gray here too. They certainly get tougher to spot while cruising down the gravel. They also seem to be moving out of the soybeans and concentrating back on the green fields. Soybeans have just started to change color a little bit.

Changing coats, hard horn antlers...The time is coming, and I can't wait! Get ready fella's!

last night i was out watching the ten-year and seen about 15 deer grazing still with the red coats then i saw a big old buck with his grey coat boy they can be hard to see

Went for a "DEER TOUR" last night and saw 2 deer out of about 30 that were darker than the rest. Some of the does are looking pretty ratty right now.

I'm not from Iowa, but I've been seeing similiar things here in NY. There are several nice 2-yr. old 8-pts. and a bruiser 3-yr. old 7-pt. that I've been watching feeding in an alfalfa field by my house since early June. Unfortunately, these are considered older age class bucks around here. Anyways, I've been trying to get some video of them for the past 2 evenings and noticed tonight that the big 7-pt. is really dark already but the does and 2-yr. old bucks are still pretty red colored. Fall is definately knocking on our doorsteps boys...I'm expecting to see some "bare bones" any time now.
