Here is a tip from John Weiss' "The Whitetail Deer Hunter's Almanac" for all those taking on the late season challenge as I am (archery season goes to December 31 up here in Minnesota).
When cold weather has been present for more than a week, water becomes critical to deer. This is especially the case when it's a dry cold and the deer are packng their bellies with dry browse such as leaves and twigs. Yet most static sources of water are frozen over now. So scout for moving water such as a stream or brook and pick a waiting spot where a trail crosses it. In time, you'll see deer coming to drink.

Good huntin'
