Well the short of it is last night i had a big one come in to 35 yards and pretty much gave me a chip shot but with the wonderful wind it threw me off as i shot and i hit him high and forward.. instead of hunting this morning i sat on a hill to glass and i watched him cruising for does right in front of the stand i shot him out of last night.. talk about a downer, and it really puts a damper on me wanting to hunt any more.

Know what you mean. I had a 160 inch 10 point come behind me last year. He was heading to an open field that was full of does and had no idea I was there. He was at 20 yards and I tried to stop him in my shooting lane, well he stopped but about 5 yards after I grunted so he was behind some light brush.

I probably could have shot through it but I had another lane that he was going to walk through so I stayed at full draw as he started walking towards the next lane.

Only problem was I was facing the tree I was in since he was behind me and had to lean back a bit to get the bow around the tree. As I did this I clipped the tree with my broadhead just enough to throw off my draw. It caused me to draw down and as I did the arrow smashed up against the tree....came off the string and rest....and went crashing to the ground....

Needless to say he was gone before the arrow hit the ground. The funniest part is the stinking lumenok lit up on the way down.

I saw him a couple more times last season but it was always at a distance. I guess it just wasnt his time.

Havent seen him this year but hopefully he shows up for shotgun

All I can say is just keep at it!

I love this story cause I can totally imagine me in that position including the lumenok:drink2:

I've got a similar story. Had a very nice 10 point come in a couple years ago 15 yrds. Thinking this is gonna be a chip shot. Didn't take into account the severe angle as he was in a ditch and I shot right over him. He just walked away. I tried to grunt at him to see if he would come back. He kept walking away. So when he got over the hill. I hit the horns, hoping he would come back around. All of a sudden I hear a branch snap and I turn around and here comes a big boy, some where in the neighborhood of 170 inches. As I go to draw back my release prematurely deploys and the arrow goes flying. The buck takes off and as he's running off, he ran over my first arrow and snapped it. This all happened with in the first 15 minutes in my stand. So I got to bang my head on the tree for the next 3 hours.

The good thing for you is he's still alive and still running by your stand so it sounds like you may have another chance.

In need of opinions. Should i only hunt this buck or shoot a different one if the opportunity arises? I'm really torn on this, What would you guys do only shoot this deer or shoot a different deer if given the chance?

Thats about an impossible question for abunch of strangers. But since you want some opinions these are the things I would be asking myself if I were you.

- How big was he?
- do you have any history with him other than this one time you saw him?
- what els do you have running around the farm you hunt?
- what were your goals before the season started?
- are you willing to eat tag soup and still be happy with your decision?

No one is really going to know the anwer to this but you, because no one els knows the hole story. If you only saw him the one time, he may live 10 miles away and was looking for does. You may never see him again. If you do have history with him, then just relax and keep hunting, If you hunt smart and hard enough you may get another crack at him. But even then To hold out for 1 paticular deer can be very tough. Ive never done it, Ive held out for 3-4 paticular deer before. But it would have to be one special deer to hold out for just one.

Say this deer in question is a 200+. And you have no history with him at all. And a 170 walks in..... are you really ganna pass? what if an old 150 you have tons of history with walks in.....are you ganna pass? Its really not a question even you can anwser until the time presents itself.

With all that said, if this buck you speak of is anything less than a 220 typical or a 334 non typical I would go back to hunting as you were before the encounter and just hope he shows back up again.

Ill also add a horror story of mine own to maby give you some comfort.

A couple years ago I started hunting a new farm, a couple weeks into it a clean 170 class 10 walks out to check some does. Ive never seen him before but Ive only been on this property for 2 weeks. long story short I ended up gut shooting him. I searched for 3 full days with nothing, I was sick. The 4th day with no ambition to really hunt, I forced myself back up in the tree. Not an hour later I rattled on the 170 ten to 15 yds, I couldnt believe I was getting a second shot at what had caused me to loose sleep over the past three nights. another long story short He jumped the string big and ran off with my arrow stuck solid in his head. I was in dis-belief. again I searched the property for 2 days with nothing. That time I actually got video of the shot, and everyone I showed it to thaught he would be fine. So at this point I really had no ambition to hunt, but figured I owed it to myself and the deer to keep at it if only to be able to see him again and make sure he was doing ok. At this point I decided it was either this deer or no deer at all. My logic being Ive already shot this deer twice, I dont know need to be shooting at anything els that year. Well it was two weeks later he showed back up again. He came cruising threw at 30 yds. I cant even explain the feeling I had, I didnt have a chance I was so shook up,(3 chances at a deer like this) what were the odds. Well for the third long story short I watched my arrow fly right over his back. My bow should have been equiped with wings at that point because I was done with it. That was the last time I saw him that year. I ate tag soup and after the worst season of my life I was fine with it.

The next year I was fortunate enough to have one more close encounter with him, and he was much bigger. The biggest typical Ive ever had close while hunting. he came into 5 yds behind me in a bunch of brush and locked up after scenting me. after a 10 min stand off he slowly backed his way out and was on his way. All I could do was smile and remember the year before and the he was one very special buck that ended up teaching me more than all the other deer I had ever hunted.

I never saw him again, and to this day I still look back and say "what if" or "if only"

If you take nothing els from this story, remember its just a deer, you never no what may transpire, and for gods sake if you do get a second shot at him make it count.
