This past week dad picked up a whole bunch of shrubs and a few pines and spruces from the local Pheasants Forever chapter. There were a wide variety of shrubs...elderberry, buttonbush, gray/silky/redosier dogwood, nannyberry, ninebark, chokecherry, plums, and buffalo berry. We got 576 shrubs/evergreens in the ground and for the first tree planting project we have learned a lot...mostly how much work it is. We weren't able to prepare the planting spots before hand with mowing, burning, or spraying so we were dealing with thick mat of brome. Conditions were perfect for planting, ground was moiste, little wind, but great to be out outdoors. Nothing better than planting trees and having turkeys strutting and gobbling 100 yards away and watching deer all over the fields! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif
it was tough to do all this work and go back not really being able to see what you just did, like planting sticks..
elderberry here
silky dogwood
colorado spruce, dad is in love with spruces and pines because they look good in his yard in town. He can't stand the look of cedar (aka overgrown weeds he called them) hopefully the deer and rabbits leave these alone but we're aren't going to hold our breath.
