Under the old Pope and Young method for scoring the nontypical (NT) minimum catagory was 150 but there had to be at least 15 inches of NT growth. If the rack only had 14-7/8 inches of NT it had to go into the typical catagory--a tremendous deduction.
Several years ago P&Y raised the NT minimum to 155 and there was no minimum NT growth as before. If the rack met both typical and NT scores it is the hunter's choice as to what category the deer is entered--but it can only be one, not both.
