Recommend Youth 20 Gauge

I'm looking to buy my boy a youth 20 gauge. I checked the local gun shop and all they had was an 1187 for about $550. I was hoping to spend under $400. Does anyone have a suggestion? If I have to spend the $500 then so be it, just thought I'd get some opinions. Thanks.
 
Single shot? I started out with them and it sure makes a person take the time to wait for the high percentage shot. If I start spraying lead with the pump or auto, I get the single shot out as "punishment".
 
I went with the rem 1187 youth for my boys. 10 and 8 now. A lot less recoil than the 870 youth or mossberg 500. Has the adjustable length of pull and comes with a couple chokes. I don't worry about it being a semi auto. I will typically only put one round in anyway. Especially when shooting trap. It was kind of a hard gun to find they don't advertise that model real well. we have had it for 2 years now and shot a lot trap with it, couple turkeys and a couple deer. Been a great gun so far. Pretty happy with how it pattens slugs as well.

Bought mine through Boyd at a buck hollow sports. I would check his pricing.
 
Bought my oldest son a 20 Ga. Mossberg bantam combo when he was 10. Thing is a tack driver with sabots. Did great for turkeys too. It will be with him for life at least as a slug gun. He just turned 18 and still shoots it with a slip over recoil pad. I need to get around to getting an adult sized stock for it.

My youngest boy turns 10 this weekend so it's time for his own first real gun. Went with the Mossberg again. Found the best price by far on it at Walmart for 250. Theisens wants 350 for same gun and for 870. Wasn't able to find it in a combo anywhere so I will order him the slug barrel. Wally world also had best price on youth 870 that I found. 280 if I remember correctly.
 
Mine all started on Bantam Mossberg mod 500. Two of the three came with a stock shim that increased the length of pull as they grew. My daughters still deer hunt with them (Bantam size makes a great ladies’ gun) but my son has long since outgrown his. One shoots rifled slugs out of the smooth bore, the other shoots sabots out of a rifled barrel with iron sights.

Escort Youth Semi-Auto. All come with stock spacers so you can match length of pull. Have the Trio Recoil Pad which makes it seem like it barely kicks at all. Also has a single round magazine cutoff so you can make it a single shot. Bought my boy his for just over $300 a couple years ago from our local FFL Dealer. He loves it and has become a pretty good shot with it. Has 3 pheasants already this season.
