The Iowa 24pt Buck and Missouri Success

I have many more photos of this deer and wanted to get my laptop up and running to share them. However, it's going to take longer than I thought. I figured what better time to share photos than when I just harvest a Missouri deer too?

In 2015 I got pictures of a new resident. He was an odd, skinny looking buck I had never seen before. His back left leg was injured and I thought he wouldn't survive the winter.

Time passes and I found one of his sheds. I notice it has a little drop tines on one side.

Fast forward to 2016, he survived the winter and BLEW UP. I was figuring he was either 4 years old at this point. I decided since he put on so much antler I'd pass him if he came by. I ended up passing him a few times during the 2016 season. I have a video of it but cannot access it.

I was excited to see what he looked like in 2017, but never got any pictures of him. He had never left his little area and I assumed he was dead. On October 31st I ended up getting daylight photos of him! He went downhill and wasn't looking very healthy. I decided if he walked by I would shoot.

On November 4th I had an 8pt I have been watching since 2014 come by and I missed him at 30 yards due to overgrown trees near my stand. I passed lots of very nice bucks and even had a 180" buck at 50 yards. I decided I wouldn't shoot the 180" buck but if he came any closer and gave me a better shot I think I would have changed my mind.

On November 5th I overslept because I forgot it was daylight savings time. A great 8pt I passed walked out of the timber on my way in and I sat there as he worked his way down the hill to 50 yards. He didn't see me and then he ran to the bottom of the hill and into a draw. I heard sparring and I looked over down into the draw and see a buck bedded down sparring with the 8pt. I didn't recolonize him at first. After about a minute of sparring the other buck leaves and I notice who it is. I went down the draw a little ways and I didn't think he knew I was there. I was too excited and shot him at 40 yards. He gets up and walks about 10 yards and falls over. He was dragging his hind legs and I thought "I didn't hit him in the butt!" I hit him perfect and walked down to him. As I begin to position the buck to gut him I noticed that his right hind leg was completely destroyed and his left leg had the old injury in bad shape. This buck was on his deathbed, he wasn't going to make it.

He must have gotten into a bad fight with a buck because he had abnormal scaring on his head and neck too.

I'm sorry team 7! I forgot to add the bow to my pictures. It was Sunday and I had gotten ready for church and didn't have much time before I had to head back to college. We did grab the cat! I took a few in the field pictures but dropped my phone in the creek dragging him out of the draw.

172" with 20 scoreable points.

Missouri Rifle Hunting

Since I was tagged out in Iowa I decided to try Missouri once and for all! I headed back home November 12th and had someone invite me to hunt 500 acres of private land in Nodaway County. Long story short it fell through and I was left standing there with an any-sex and a doe tag. I had no access and called my Dad to see if he knew of anybody that had land near where I was planning to hunt. Turns out one of our good family friends moved there and started farming! I had his number and gave him a call. He had quite a bit of private to hunt and I hunted the 12th and missed a 120" 8pt and saw a 140" 10pt twice. I went back down there this weekend and hunted Friday-Sunday.

On Friday I went to some public land that was buck only and saw 12 does and 3 bucks (One was a 115" 9pt 2-year old I didn't have the heart to shoot). I went out that evening on their place and saw a few does and one small buck cruised by.

Saturday morning was NASTY and I didn't want to hunt. I invited the landowner's son to tag along with me Saturday and he had a BLAST (He's addicted now). He couldn't hunt because his hand was injured. We went out about 9 am and got access to a few more properties and only saw one doe even though there was lots of sign on the properties.

We climbed into a stand behind their house at around 3 pm and 10 minutes later a doe came sprinting across the field. I pulled up the 7mm WSM and drilled her at 125 yards and she ran 50 yards and dropped. I then saw a very nice buck run out of the timber into the open on the other side of the hay field at 40MPH I ran my heart out to the edge of the hill and didn't make it in time...he was gone. The neighbors had pushed the property and the deer right to us.

We got out of the stand and went to a different property and we saw a WIDE buck (130-140ish). We were able to drive closer and I started uncasing my rifle. All of the sudden I heard the Jeep door slam...the kid had slammed the door because he was so excited to get out and go after the deer. We saw white flags go into the timber, I told him not to worry about it and we went up there anyway. We didn't see anything and he kept apologizing. I said, "No harm done, I was able to get one deer and I already screwed up on a buck the first time around."

Sunday morning we overslept and didn't get out until 7:45. While driving to our spot we saw a 150" buck chasing a doe on one of the neighbors and went his house and got permission. He gave it to us and we headed back there. The doe was bedded down, but we couldn't find the buck. I was able to sneak over a hill and bumped them. I saw two tails and only one deer ran out into the pasture. I was waiting for the buck when the kid whistled at me. The buck and a doe had doubled back behind me and we were able to see him and hear him grunting and chasing the doe down in the timber but he ran her onto the other neighbors and we called it a morning and went to church. We didn't see anything in the afternoon on Sunday.

Missouri was a blast and definitely worth the $250 non-resident tag price.

Crazy what timing can do. Had you gotten up when you wanted to, you may have never known that guy was bedded where he was. The sparring going on over there would have happened long after you had passed through. Congrats man!

I overslept with the time change once and I'll never do it again. Or now should I! Awesome deer TH

Looks like the "weapon in the picture" rule has been suspended, so post that bad boy in the scoring thread.
