I am new to planting winter rye. Is it too early to plant winter rye? What is the ideal height to keep the rye at? When is the earliest this summer/fall that I could plant the winter rye with good results? I will be planting a half acre of it. Does it need to be drug in or can i just broadcast on top? Thanks

I would definitely not do it now, it will be far less desirable by the time you hunt it. I do mine first part of September up in the north part of the state.

The problem I have is I sprayed the ground 2 weeks ago and the farmer tilled up the 1/2 acre plot today. The ground is worked. Won't the ground firm up by September 1 and I will have to get the tractor and tiller back in there?

Nope. Worst case- spray again when u plant it. Rye grows pretty well broadcast & is often used to fly over or spread on combined fields. So- waiting is worth it and will achieve ur goals with minimal extra work.
