Rye

It will grow up fast to about 3'-4' tall and then die out by mid to late July. I have just left rye standing several times in past years and then follow it with brassicas in early August. You will need to mow the rye off and depending, you could end up with a lot of chaff to deal with, but it will be 98% all dead by then. Alternatively, if you have clover coming on underneath it...I have left the rye alone through the summertime and then mowed it off revealing a beautiful clover plot by early to mid August, perhaps even earlier.

Related...I looked at a field of mine today that is rye from last year and it is about 3' tall and I jumped three bedded young bucks out of it. I find that the rye fields are popular for bedding and also fawning cover.
