    Cereal Grains and cover crops

Excellent post, Paul! As you know, the Elbon rye variety is a release from our area and we've planted it for many years. How do those seeds compare to rye you commonly plant? It is vey likely we both have rye fom the same seed fields this year. Elbon seed seems smaller than what you normally...

    Timber Stand Improvment

Staight glyphosate (41%) or straight triclopyr (~60%).....from your experiences which would be most effective on killing hickory via hack/squirt? Mixed opinions based on those I've talked with so far!

    Lime question

How long the effect of lime (pelleted or loose form) will last is dependant upon particle size and soil type. Particle sizes <100 mesh are the fastest acting. Particle sizes from 60-100 mesh are longer acting. Particle sizes >20 mesh are generally non-active. Soils high in sand content are...

    Lime question

Haven't visited here in a while but thought I'd add some info to address some issues. If you are interested in trying supercal 98G and want to save on shipping, then contact your local Conklin dealer. The product number I've been using is 056176 and my order back in March was $236 for thirty...

Did you run it through the PTO cone spreader or the Earthway? The plot is narrow so I'll just be ginger with the Earthway! :way:

    Edge Feathering and bedding areas

Thanks for your reply. The fuel in most of our burn areas are leaves, some downed limbs from ice storms and the prdominant grasses are short panicums. So by your definition that would be less than 1 hour fuel load. Do you have a table or some other descriptive which better describes the fire...

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

Chickling vetch came in from Welters today along with the pea/vetch innoc. Then I opened the bag to look at the seed....queerest looking seed I've ever seen. Thought I'd been sold a bag of gravel....so out came the knife to disect....sure enough seeds. Can't wait to get it planted.....prolly gly...

    Alfalfa

That is encouraging! :D Our spring falcata planting is still in the early trifoliate stages and small plants. Trying to be patient! :drink2:

    Oak Savannas

Mini weed dragon with small propane bottles. Atwoods sells a knock-off of this which has a built-in ignitor. We have the knock-off. http://www.amazon.com/Red-Dragon-VT-1-32-Propane/dp/B002LH46M8 Like I mentioned on the other forum....parent fire from a drip torch will last longer initially...

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

Ditto! Rye this spring was very sparse in our overseeds from last fall into thick white clover. Fall growth of rye and oats was acceptable, however. May try seeding then mowing close to cover this fall. Better chance of it working in clover stands with less than 80% area coverage.

    Edge Feathering and bedding areas

Trying to glean a bit from your experience in setting back invasives and and shade tolerants in oak stands. How many burns (or burn frequency) and how long to eliminate hickory and elm? What size of hickory or elm won't be affected by fire? The Noble consultants made the same sugestion to me and...

    Alfalfa

Not sure, but some of the Cimmaron distributors should be able to get it. Also contact Cimmaron directly. Please post what you find out! ;)

    Oak Savannas

Really curious how your project turns out. We have timber to thin and will be faced with the same situation as you. Please post pics of your progress over time. The cut stumps seal over pretty quick after cutting making it harder for the herbicide to work with a delay period. Best if one guy...

    Oak Savannas

IQDM, Did you treat the hickory stumps and let them rest for a year before tilling or dozing or whatever ground prep you did? Only reason I mention this is because chaining and(or) dozing timber to create pasture is our area was very popular back in the 70's and 80's. Without killing timber...

    Alfalfa

Thought you'd like that variety! Finding seed may be an issue....Kauffman has one of the other Cimarron varieties so maybe he can get some! :) Considering last fall and winter were very wet with some sharp cold fronts, I think that my Sept planted falcata heaved or lodged whichever is the...

    Alfalfa

Initial 'handfull here and there' test last fall for falcata looks 'okay' in our area. Had to get down on my hand and knees to find the seedlings...pencil lead sized redish stem with tiny trifoliates less than a pinky nail in size and in a cluster. Germ % didn't look very high but there wasn't...

    Oak Savannas

Great point! Protecting them by removing clutter with a blower or forestry rake would work. I'd still remove those within 50 yds of a break just like for solid dead snags. Liability vs wildlife benefit should always be weighed before burning considering todays 'sue happy' society. The big...
