    Request

I am the owner of Step Ahead Outdoor Solutions, which is the home of the Non-Typical Whitetail Journal. If you visit the IW site much I am sure you have seen our ad. This was the first hunting season that our online journal has been available. I was happy with how things went, being the first...

    Selective Cutting Timber

Update - The district forester has been to our farm twice so far. He came the week of Christmas and went over about half of the area we want to work on and then came back last Friday when I could be there and went over it with me since I wasn't there the first time. He still has a pretty good...

    LSA Report

Thanks for posting that. It is a very interesting read. One thing that I think fails to show up in there and may lead to some misconceptions is that since the license fees increased a couple of years ago alot of NR hunters are reluctant to tie up $550 for 3-4 months when they know they will only...

    Draw Weight

I am interested in hearing opinions on draw weight for turkey hunting. I think I am going to try it with my bow this Spring. Right now my bow is set up for deer hunting. It is set at about 70lbs, maybe just a hair more. I would like to leave it where it is because it shoots really well, but I...

    Non-Res Holiday?

I agree. As someone who has family that I grew up hunting with that live in another state I completely agree. I think that people forget that not all non-residents are here chasing monster bucks, or buying anterless tags to find a loop hole in the system. Some people just want to come and hunt...

    Food Plots in the Timber

Some other things I should mention: - These sites will be relatively easy to access for mowing, planting and other maintenance - We are willing and able to do as much clearing as we need to to make them work, within reason. I don't want to clearcut an acre of timber for a 1/4 acre plot. -...

    Food Plots in the Timber

I really would like to establish a few (3 or 4) small plots in the woods for next season. I am wondering what people have had good luck with for plots like this. I need plants that don't need full sun, and I obviously would like them to be a viable option for the deer during hunting season. I am...

Interesting Situation, what do you think.

I try to stay out of stuff like this, but in this case in will offer my two cents. Shooting a buck out of season and with a rifle is an obvious crime. The bullet and any part of the deer would be evidence of the crime. If any other type of crime was commited on someone's property I don't...

    Tebow Time?

Even as a Packer fan I will say that would have been pretty cool. By the way after looking at your pictures, I realized that your wife was my daughter's teacher last year. She loved her! I guess it really is a small world.

    State plaque

Skull-Lok is the way to go for a European mount. I know John (owner) very well. He is a super guy and a big bowhunter. I believe you can even customize the plaque if you want to. Give him a call!

    Out of State Gun Tag

There are twice as many guns tags given to NR as bow tags, but the applicants are almost reversed, so it is much easier to get a gun tag than a bow tag. In other words it may be every two-three years to draw a bow tag, but a NR could easily draw a gun tag almost every year.

    Bowhunter Surveys

Here are some more numbers for you guys to take a look at. These are from hunters using the Non-Typical Whitetail Journal. These observations are from hunts in Iowa, with a bow and starting on October 1st of 2011. These observations are from hunters in 5 different counties. 418 Hours Hunted...

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

dbltree, I may have missed it somewhere on this thread, but what is the approx. cost per acre for the fall mix you show on the first page of this thread? I have planted alot of those things before, but never that specific group all together. I think it would be a great blend to try next year...

    Selective Cutting Timber

Thanks for all the great information. I will start with a call to our district forester. I am sure I will have more questions as we go about our plan.

    Selective Cutting Timber

We would like to do some selective cut logging on our farm to enhance the habitat in some areas. The areas we are looking at are heavily timbered ridges and draws, but there is a severe lack of undergrowth and browse. The trees are mostly hardwood, oaks, hickory, cherry, etc. There are some that...
