    How long for TSI?

Thanks for the responses. The EF pics are comforting to know that they help bedding areas, because I have been hesitating clearing these hickories because of the "tornado damage" that it will look like when I'm done...but it appears that could help the deer/buck picture creating that type of...

    How long for TSI?

It took almost 3 years for mine to fall, but I have a similar question for those of you that have had TSI work done. The TSI I had done wasn't as extensive as I thought it would be, the "bad" trees were killed, but my timber is dense with smal/pole sized hickory in areas with 3-5 inch diameter...

    Native Warm Season Grass

Re: Plateau/Journey herbicide for NWSG interesting story huntyak - I had the same thing happen to me which is one of the reasons the alfalfa/hay guy that I let on this ground won't be there next year. Thanks for the input, I think I'll just go with straigh drop/frost seeding (if the stock...

    Native Warm Season Grass

Re: Plateau/Journey herbicide for NWSG I don't have pictures to prove it, but I had 16-17 acres put in with cost share 3 years ago that was a CP25 mix. I hope to get pictures this fall to post. I had Rich/Raven from Iowa Habitats plant for me and this was the year I contracted a burn through...

    killing Black Locust

I had good luck with Tordon RTU cut stump with smaller locusts(honey and black) without using anything mixed in...but I had small trees in my prairie that I used it on...less then 2 inch diameter. For slightly bigger trees that I didn't want to get under and get grabbed and poked, I had good...

    Indian grass burn response

have you noticed big blue outcompete Indian grass or vice versa? I have a mixed stand in the early stages and I was wondering who might win out or if they play well together.

    Switchgrass

Re: Switchgrass - August yes, I was trying to be very careful to only spray the thistle, but when they were so thick, my concentration turned to "get it done" in several circumstances and I'm sure I oversprayed in many spots. Admittedly, I did use a high concentration of the tordon 22k, so...

    Switchgrass

Re: Switchgrass - August I had big problems with canada thistle when I visited my place in the spring. I haven't been able to visit my place much this summer, but after a paniced mowing after seeing them taking over, and then later manually cutting(riding an ATV through them while yielding a...

    Clover

what clip height do you guys usually mow your clover at? I only have access to a garden tractor and at the tallest setting it mulches down the clover pretty good so I was wondering if clipping too low was a concern?

    Switchgrass

Re: Switchgrass - Thistle control I am obviously data sheet impaired, can you guys help as to how many oz per gallon I should use milestone to be used in a spot spray mode? I see 5-7 oz per acre, but I'm not sure what that translate to for my small spot sprayer...any help would be appreciated.

    Switchgrass

Re: Switchgrass - after the burn after doing some searching, apparently Dow has a relatively new product that is safe to spray in natives and is really tough on types of thistly so hopefully if I keep them cut, this will work in the fall. thought some of you may find this interesting and could...

    tree planting

I'd guess within 10 days. I had trees planted last year and 2 years ago and they appeared to be a loss as of last summer, but they appeared to have really bounced back this year, I guess it was the rain. I just saw the Chicago news about protecting young trees from the 17yr sicada's, is anyone...

    Switchgrass

Re: Switchgrass - my burn I had natives planted in my fields last year. I haven't visited my place hardly at all this year but had a chance to drive by on Friday, and the smaller field that was planted in prairie last year was filled in with wall to wall thistles. they were 2 ft high already...

    More questions on trees

I have read about it's native uses (I think it is referred to as the toothache tree), but I'm concerned at my place about them getting too big and dense to manage. I hope to hire a fall burn this year to knock them back and then start a cycle of timber burns. I have heard a fall burn is hotter...

    Native Warm Season Grass

Re: Plateau/Journey herbicide for NWSG is Journey/Plateau something a non-license can get a hold of? is it available at Farm and Fleets/TSC's? I haven't run acrossed it under that name. I'm thinking I should spray my areas in April and was wondering if I could get my hands on it.

    Switchgrass

is it too late to "frost seed" a CP25 mix on bare ground considering the temps? I had my one day in the field this year last week and finished clover frost seeding and it seemed to be a good day for that, but I ran out of time. I have some CP25 mix left over and I have small areas I want to...

    TSI Pictures

great pics. I still haven't found the courage to girdle/cut down oaks near each other...I'm working myself into it even though I know it is the right thing to do. Couple questions, I think I have small 2-5 inch diameter elms all over the place and I hope to make it down to cut them down...do...

    Ready To Burn!?!

I'd love to do a timber burn this year...need to find someone to do it though...and then my first native grassland burn is set for 2008...can't wait to see the results.

to haul or not to haul?

I don't have a tractor, but I leave my atv/mower down there...each time I pull up I squint my eyes assuming it has grown legs. Once I save enough money...I'll get a small tractor..but I'm saving for a "real" place to store it safely so it will have to wait for when I have the money to do both.

    Field report

Great post and great pics. You need to find a publisher and get a book out quick...count me in as a buyer. I can envision Sam Elliott doing the book on tape. Unfortunately, I've experienced the same fork buck slayers in my area, but I did get out yesterday in the SE wind and saw lots of deer...
