True $ value of a NR Tag

Leftover tags In 2008 there were 8536 antlerless tags left over from the county tags that were never purchased. In 2007 there were 8821 tags not purchased. In 2006 there were 4828 tags not purchased. I imagine that the number of tags for each county is set based on the number of deer that...

True $ value of a NR Tag

I bowhunt, this year they moved all licenses to shotgun season. So I can't use my bow to harvest an antlerless deer on my place. So, I don't. The price is rediculous too.

True $ value of a NR Tag

Reading the information from the DNR, it appears that more does need to be harvested in numerous areas. What would be the problem with allowing NR to harvest some does each year on thier own land? It seems that would be in step with the goals of the IDNR and be good management locally.

    NR tags exceed $500

Careful Since we are talking free market, let's assume that the DNR finds the price of equilibrium. That point at which the number of applicants is almost equal to the number of tags available. Let's say that price is $2500. Now you have 6k guys who can afford the $2500 price tag and they...

    Switchgrass Question for dbltree?

If the bottom ground floods very often, you will eventually only have the switch left. If flooding is an issue, don't waste the mix and go with switch only.

    Miscanthus Update (Updated Picts)

Re: Miscanthus Update I planted 75 this spring and 80% of it is doing well. With the big flooding this spring, it was under about 3 ft of water for a week. About 50% survived with the leaves still green. On some, the leaves are brown but it may come back. I'll just have to wait and see.

Nonresident Landowners, check out this website.

Re: Nonresident Landowners, check out this website I'm just a guy. One guy. Who happens to be a NR landowner. I bought my piece of heaven in 1998. I lived in Iowa and wanted a place I could hunt forever. It was just a cornfield but I was convinced, if I did things right I could make it a...

    Rut question

There is a new moon on November 9th. That might create a more intense rut around that date. This might be due to less light causing more does to go into heat around the same time. The diminishing moonlight could create an earlier rut. Just someones theory but everyone should pay attention...

    Fall clover

I had great success last year with fall clover. I planted on August 9th. I sprayed, waited two weeks, then I disked, broadcast a mix of winter wheat, rye, and oats. Disked it in lightly. Rolled it. Broadcast the clover and rolled again. It was a great fall attractant and the clover...

    Question

My food plot acres are capped at 5 acres even though I have over 100 in the program. So my advice would be to check first. Plant second.

Only a one acre foodplot, what to plant

My bet would be winter wheat, rye, and oats. Or something similar that is green late into the season. Doesn't cost much either. Alfalfa would be good if you want a more permanent plot.

    Fertilizer for Corn

I'm going to try some sustainable agriculture. I'm going to split all my food plots in half and plant half in berseem clover and half in sorghum (you could do corn). The berseem will fix 80-100 units of N per acre. It then dies out in the winter and all I have to do is pull in and no till my...

    Poast-For grasses

Just for clarification. I use 1.5pts mixed with 15 gllns of water and spray about 1 acre. I thought that 1.5pts was 24 oz? Have I been measuring wrong?

    Poast-For grasses

I've used 1.5 pts/acre with good results. I plan to add butyrac 200 to the mix this spring for control of broadleafs in my clover fields.

    Switchgrass Burn Time?

After the cool season grasses are green but before mid April to avoid nesting birds. If this is the only area of grass on your farm you may want to consider dividing it into two areas if possible and only burn one area this year and the other one next year. This would leave some cover for the...
