    Beans and corn together

I start with a disc'd field that I have spray with roundup a time or two. Then broadcast, the a light disc. If I have the time I may drag it with a harrow to smooth it out a little. It works surprisingly well if you can get a little help with rain

Sounds like an amazing project for the family.

    Transplants

I dig them up with a rootball. Early spring or Fall is probably best for me but like Snail said they are very Hardy. Doing them bare root would probably make the job a lot easier but I haven't tried that. Here is a pic of what I dig up

    Transplants

I have transplanted hundreds of cedars over about every season. At least a 95% success. I have purchased bare root cedars and had very poor results. Transplanting is the way to go IMO. I transplant when they are between 1-2' tall. They are a little stunted for the first year after...

    Land prices / insane!!!

Hey cottonwood Here is what I mean. The biggest problem facing wildlife in many midwestern states in a loss of habitat. Look at any aerial photography from any county in Iowa for the last 30 years and you will typically see a huge degredation of habitat. Every year an Army of excavators and...

Looking for ideas on tree tubes…

I use the 58" plantra. I buy direct from plantra. They are not cheap but I have had good luck with them. In areas where I suspect the bucks will want to rub on them, i put a wire cage around them also.

    Land prices / insane!!!

Meh, there are a million anecdotal bad scenarios why not to do something. Hunt clubs, amish, tree huggers, peta freaks, bad hunters, disease, etc. At the end of the day a guy either has to make a decision to go for it or just keep sitting on the sidelines wishing and hoping and then making...

    Land prices / insane!!!

IMO- if you can buy now you SHOULD. Beg, borrow, leverage. Whatever it takes. Just don't be silly with too much risk. Understand the investment and not just the price. Most likely there is NO correction coming that will have a large enough impact to make a deal great. Yep, interest rates...

    Land prices / insane!!!

Don't forget about all the city people wanting land in rural areas. Many aren't hunters they are just fleeing the cities. Especially those coming from the east and west coast. Selling a small house in a CA city will buy a lot in rural midwest. Now add 250,000/month illegals flooding those...

    Cold Feet

I like my heated socks I got from amazon. They are relatively inexpensive and last about 6 hours and recharge via usb charger. The trick I found is to put on a thin pair of normal socks then put on the heated ones. I wear Danner pronghorns 800g for boots. Toasty feet

    MOST COMMON POACHING METHODS???

I think shooting from trucks is the #1 around me. Trail cams seem to have reduced the blatant trespassing. I was thinking about mounting some fake wireless trail cam/wireless security cam way up high on the Telephone poles along the road. Utility Co might take them down but it may give the...

    Chestnuts

Habitat1 I have only been doing chestnuts for a couple years but maybe I can help with your questions. To keep critters away, I just mowed about 3-4 feet around each tree. I also have a mulch ring around each tree with the mulch piled about 3" up the side of the tube. So far that has kept the...

    WHY IS IOWA GREAT?

I agree with much of what you say but would also add-most people over simplify this debate. The type of weapon used and how the DNR manages that weapon is definitely a factor but without a base of environment/climate/terrain/genetics you will not replicate Iowa. The same reason why antelope...

    WHY IS IOWA GREAT?

There it is! Gun season or not, if you don't have the right environment/habitat/terrain/genetics it would be extremely difficult to replicate what Iowa has.
