    Clover in food plot

My farm is in NE MO. I won't be able to get back to it until late May. I want to plant 2 acres of clover but am concerned it's too late. If we get adequate rain I'd be less concerned. What do you think? Thanks.

    EHD in SE Iowa?

I have a farm in NE Missouri and this county has been hard hit by EHD. 330 cases reported so far. Just wondered if anyone lives in SE Iowa and has knowledge of how it's affecting your area.

    Need a summer plot

I was going to plant alfalfa in a 3 acre plot but the rain has delayed me too long. Now I'll do it in August. I'd like to plant something for the summer what do you recommend? I'm thinking buckwheat. Whatever I do, I'll take it out in August.

    Too late for alfalfa?

I think I will plant a 3 acre field in alfalfa. Am I too late? Should I wait until August? Should I plant a nurse crop, oats? If I wait how would it be to plant buckwheat until I put in the alfalfa? What's the application rate for drilling? For broadcasting? Thanks for any...

Ladino clover and Buck Forage Oats

A couple of questions about these plants. Last fall I planted Ladino in a couple of fields. I was satisfied with the growth but once we had frost the clover seemed to wilt badly. Is this typical? If so does any clover stand up to frost so I have something green growing in the late season...

    Getting rid of water hemp

I understand this is becoming RoundUp tolerant. I wondered what some of you are planning for this year when dealing with this weed.

    Alfalfa

I have a 3 acre field that was in soybeans this year. I'd like to plant it in alfalfa next year. I planted RR alfalfa on my old farm and liked the results. I planted the alfalfa in the fall and got good results, but would like to plant it this spring so it will be growing well by fall. I...

    Your thoughts for next year

We're making changes for next year and I would like your thoughts. I have 166 acres, 30 acres is open the rest is hard woods with lots of oaks. We're doing TSI on 39 acres through a state program this winter. In the front of the farm, we're changing from corn to native grasses and forbes...

    Convincing neighbor to do QDMA

A guy leases the land beside my farm. He charges for people to day hunt there. Unfortunately the hunters shoot anything that's legal. We have a 4 point restriction in the county but they don't let young bucks grow up. Any ideas how I can convince him to begin quality deer management? I...

What to plant in clay soil

I have some areas (road width size) that lead into my larger food plots. I'd like to plant something in them but they are heavy clay and don't hold much water. Some of the strips get a lot of sun; others don't get much. Is there anything I can plant in them to provide a food source and...

    Eagle Seed

I'm planning to plant about 4 acres of Eagle's Manager Mix this year. It's mainly soybeans with some other things thrown in. Just wondered if anyone has used it? What kind of results did you have?

Crop rotation from milo to alfalfa

I have 4 acres currently planted in milo. Next spring I'd like to plant alfalfa in this field. Of course I'll get a soil report but normally will I have to add much fertilizer and lime to get the alfalfa going? This field is on a hill top and so drainage should be good which I understand is...

    Sunflower failure

I planted about 1/3 acre of sunflowers for doves and turkeys. It came up and looked good and then died. The local MFA guy said if I had sprayed the field in the last year that was the reason. I used 2-4D to kill the weeds before I planted. Looks like another lesson learned for a rookie. Let...

    Whitetail Institute Power Plant

I planted about 2 1/2 acres in this stuff and am very disappointed. The only thing that came up was the milo. The few other plants that came up were eaten by deer before they had a chance to grow very much. From now on I'll be using Welter's or one of the other seed companies. I'm thinking...

    Chicory Plus and Winter Wheat

I'm planting some Whitetail Institute Chicory Plus (clover) in September. The instructions say use 20 lbs per 3 acres. If I want to plant some winter wheat with it, how many pounds per acre do you recommend? Thanks for any help.

Milo now, alfalfa in fall or spring

I planted some milo this year because it was so wet I didn't get anything out until too late for alfalfa. I want to switch to alfalfa when I can. Should I wait until next spring? What do I need to do when I switch? Brush hog any remaining milo stalks and then disk? If I do it in the...

    Milo germination

Wondered if someone could answer a question. I've never planted milo until this year. Due to the rain I didn't get it out until the end of June. When can I expect to see some growth coming up? I feel like an expectant father since I'm new to food plots and don't know what to expect. I...

    Coon problems

I've been having problems with coons messing with my feeders. They have eaten through wiring, messed with the motors and chewed through a couple of the plastic tops on them. The feeders were put out to help the deer through the winter and get a good start in the spring but the coons are...

Need help on what to plant and when

I'm new to this site but really like what I see. I wondered if you could offer some advice to one of your southern neighbors. It's 120 acres in N. Missouri about 15 miles from Iowa. Field 1 and 3 (each is about 1/4 acre)had clover this year and I'll leave them alone. Field 2 about 3-4...
