Feds to Study Critical Habitat for Idaho Caribou

6/11/2009

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has agreed to investigate reserving critical habitat areas for wild caribou in Idaho and Washington as the result of a lawsuit filed by the Defenders of Wildlife and three other conservation groups.

The conservation groups filed a lawsuit with the U.S. District Court in Spokane, Wash. in January in order to force the service to make a decision on critical habitats for the caribou. The groups started a petition in 2002 asking the service to designate a critical habitat area for the only remaining caribou herd in the lower 48 states. The agency never responded, prompting a lawsuit.

Early last week, the issue was addressed in an out-of-court settlement. The stipulations for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service included a 2011 deadline for a decision on a permanent habitat.
