DIY Sleeper cab

So I am planning on getting a utility trailer for various needs, and I got to thinking. Some of the properties I hunt are two hours away and have no place to spend the night (other than a tent). I've been driving back and forth during bow season on the weekends and I don't want to continue this for obvious reasons (drive time, fuel, etc). So I'm thinking about building a cheap 7' x 5' x ? tall sleeper cab to slide onto the trailer along with my ATV. Very basic. Just a fold down bed, small closet, and an electric heater.

Anyone out there ever do anything similar? Do's and dont's? I kind of know what I want to do but I am open to ideas. I know keeping the weight down will be priority. Feel free to share ideas. If you got pics, even better.

It so happens that I just saw an article last week that may help you here...

It is a corn shaped coffin! You could bolt that baby right to the trailer and it could double as a sleeping space AND a blind. Although you may be at risk of getting a baiting citation! :D

But seriously, I don't have any good plans or advice on the sleeper cab, but I like the idea. When I first bought my farm and did not have a camper/cabin to stay in, I just slept in the back of the cab of my truck. It was a little snug, but it was doable.

I would think you could build something from aluminum though that could be pretty useful. Good luck, be sure to post some pics when you get it done.

Look at buying an older, small, hard sided camper and just leave it onsite. Older units are fairly cheep and will give you more room and amenities.

Been thinking about going this route for a while also. Problem is vandals on one particular farm. Plus I would want to be mobile as possible, as I have different farms to hunt in different areas. Thought about just buying a service van and putting a cot and such in it, and using that as my hunting rig. But then I would have another vehicle to store, insurance, repairs, and so on. I would rather just build me a cheap human kennel that I can load on a trailer quick.

A buddy of mine has an enclosed trailer that is 7x16 with a vee front. He partitioned it off for his 4 wheeler in the back and 2 bunks made out of 2x4 and plywood and bought a mattress for each. He has wired it to hook up at campground if needed.

We used to have an old camper sitting around that could be pulled behind the four wheeler, I'd look for one of those. You could probably find them fairly cheap ($400-500). You can attach the four wheeler to the end of the camper or just put the four wheeler in your pickup bed.

I bought a old camper, it had a leak. Gutted it, and now putting it all back together. nothing specials, but will do the trick

If you are able to climb in and out, use a hard bed topper. Insulate it and put some shelving and drawers in it. Your body heat will keep it toasty most nights. Get a small trailer for the atv.

Leaning more and more toward the topper idea. It would be nice to have one anyways. I worry about cold Dec temps. I suppose some foam insulation and a small electric heater. 20 years ago I'd sleep under the stars and not think anything of it. Its more about comfort now. Guess I'm getting soft these days. Thanks for all the replies!

Came across this and thought of this post:

Might be a little heavy for a utility trailer, depending on the trailer, and doesn't look like it would fit in a regular truck box (width), but the idea could be adapted. Just put some elk horns and a little deck on the back and you would be set!
