EHD in 2016

Deer Nut

PMA Member
I lost a few mature bucks last year to EHD. One absolute giant. I was wondering what everyone's guess is on this years chances of an outbreak, and why. I do most of my hunting in SE Iowa and it seems to be a bit dry there. At home near Iowa City the ground can't take amymore water right now. I recall people saying it was most prevalent in dry years because the midge has more muddy banks to hatch from. Last year was a pretty normal year as far as rainfall where I hunt and we lost a number of deer still. I'm no specialist on the subject. What are your predictions?

There will likely be a few pockets here and there every year. But as far as a 2012-2013esc outbreak, i dont think we will see that IMO. You never know though

Last year proved that EHD is more than a drought year problem. If the herd around me does not start building some tolerance, there will never be a need for antlerless tags again.

I'm in extreme S.E. Lee county and we lost some last year too. Rainfall was heavy until August last year. We've been good on rai here so far. Seeing some big bucks again this year so far
