Animal Kills by Federal Agency More than Double

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services department has killed more than double the number of animals than in 2007, and environmentalists are up in arms.

For the 2008 fiscal year, 4.9 million animals were killed compared to 2007’s 2.4 million. The agency stated that the increase is because of more accurate computer counting methods.
A service report showed that 90 percent of the animals killed were nuisance birds.

The agency plans to start removing up to 2,000 Canada geese from the 5-mile radius of John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport in New York City. They believe more accidents will be prevented, like the recent collision that forced an airplane to make an emergency landing in the Hudson River.

WildEarth Guardians accused the agency of “waging a war on wildlife” on June 16 and promised to increase their opposition to the killings of animals by Wildlife Services.
