First deer and I did it with a bow!

My boyfriend is an active PMA member of the site and I always found myself looking at photos and reading stories over his shoulder. Just recently I decided to start an account of my own to tune into new photos and stories when I wanted.

Just this summer I got into bow hunting. I have always enjoyed hunting and the outdoors just never had anyone to teach me the ropes. My boyfriend has taken on the role of my "guide" if you prefer. We have been doing a lot of scouting the past few months on a local farmer's land. After hanging 3 sets of stands and watching trail camera pictures all year it was about time to get in a stand.

A few weekends ago we hit the stands. The first morning we didn't see anything and that night we had a doe come in but never close enough to shoot before the end of shooting light. The next morning I had a crack at a doe. Thought it was a decent shot but after tracking blood for 2 and half hours, I thought a little different. Because I only pull back 45 pounds and hadn't quite found the right broadhead (Rage 40KE), the little shoulder that I did hit put a stop to the arrow. It was bit disappointing but nevertheless I couldn't wait to get back at it.

Today was the first day back out. My boyfriend put a ground blind in for us while I was at college this last week and that was our prime choice this morning. Around 8:15 we had a doe walk by at about 10 yards. Cold weather and nerves got the best of my muscles and I couldn't pull back. She got away and started to blow behind us. It wasn't 10-15 minutes later and a buck came in! It wasn't any of the monsters we have been after but I didn't much care. After pulling back and letting down once while he dinked around, he came into my shooting lane. Quartering away at about 15 yards I let a Muzzy MX-3 fly at him.

After letting him lay for a couple hours, just to be totally sure with what appeared as maybe a touch back hit, we went to find him. I was surprised to find out that it was a complete pass through, went in a few inches in front of his diaphragm and exited just behind the opposite shoulder. Double lungs and heart shot! I couldn't believe it. We tracked blood for about 25 yards and sure enough when we looked up we saw him about 30 yards ahead! My goal for this season was to get a crack at at least 1 deer with my bow and I did it! He isn't big by any means but he is my first deer ever and I did it with a bow!
