How Old?

A friend of mine who is a DNR biologist for WVA shot a doe that was off of there aging chart which goes to 8 years.

A friend of mine who is a retired Iowa DNR employee showed me the lower jaw from a doe he killed. The teeth were worn almost flat and extended only slightly above the gum line. He guessed the age at 10 years old, ancient for a whitetail in the wild.

I've been told that the jaw bone is not a good indicator of age in Iowa due to the soil types.

Some states that have more sand and finer rock particles in the soil will have deer whittle their teeth down to nothing long before they will in the rich loamy state of Iowa.

Makes sense to me.
