Application Period Open For Learn To Bear Hunt Program

April 15th, 2009

MADISON, Wisconsin – People interested in learning to hunt bear have until May 30 to file an application for a spot in one of the Learn to Bear Hunt programs held August 28-30. Invitations to participate in a program will be offered to successful applicants following a drawing on June 10.

While many of the participants in the learn to bear hunt program are youths, the program is open to novices of any age with an interest in this sport and less than two years hunting experience. The goals of the Learn to Hunt program are to provide a hunting experience to novice hunters who would not otherwise get such a chance in a safe environment where they can learn game habits and behavior, hunting techniques, hunting ethics and safe firearm use from experienced mentors.

Other Learn to Hunt programs are available throughout the year, including a learn to deer hunt program that will take place in early November this year at the Sandhill State Wildlife Area.

Additional Learn to Hunt programs for turkey, waterfowl and pheasant are expected.

Additional information about upcoming programs in your area can be requested via email to [DNRWildlifeWebmail@Wisconsin.gov].

The learn to bear hunt program is also interested in recruiting additional bear hunting mentors. Persons interested in becoming a bear hunting mentor and who are not already certified as a mentor, must submit an application, the sooner the better according to wildlife and conservation law enforcement officials at the Department of Natural Resources.

Anyone interested in seeing a Learn to Hunt program for bear or other species in their area should contact their area conservation warden or wildlife manager by May 22 Youth Hunts.

The Department of Natural Resources has also set up additional opportunities for youths ages 12 through 15 with annual Youth Turkey, Deer, and Waterfowl Hunts. Youth hunts take place on weekends when only the youths are able to hunt the target species and are open to those youths who have completed a Wisconsin Hunter Education Course or have a completion certificate for a similar course in another state.
