Montana’s Spring Black Bear Season Is On Tap
March 22nd, 2009

Montana’s spring black bear hunting season opens April 15. Black bear hunting licenses purchased after April 14 can only be used for the fall black bear season. Only one black bear license is issued to an individual each year.

To purchase a license, bear hunters must successfully complete bear ID training. FWPs bear ID training is on the FWP Web site on the Education page.

Hunters who have already successfully passed the bear identification test do not need to retake the training. However, all black bear hunters are urged to continuously hone their bear identification skills to distinguish a black bear from a grizzly. Grizzly bears, a federally protected, threatened species, are not hunted in Montana.

For more on black bear hunting in Montana, see the 2009 black bear hunting regulations available on the FWP Web site at fwp.mt.gov and from FWP license providers.
