Applications for early muzzleloader deer licenses and fall turkey combination gun/bow licenses go on sale July 14 - August 5. The applications are ONLY available from the electronic license sales agents.

There is a limit of 7500 licenses for early muzzleloader deer and 6225 for gun/bow combination fall turkey. No other licenses may be purchased at this time.

"Hunters need to know they purchase deer and turkey licenses or apply for limited quota licenses directly from their license agent and no longer mail the application to the DNR," said Terry Little, DNR wildlife biologist.

If applications for early muzzleloader or fall turkey licenses exceed the quotas, a drawing will be held to determine which hunters will receive licenses. Licenses will be mailed to successful applicants in August and refunds to those unsuccessful.

If quotas are not filled, the remaining licenses will go on sale August 18 until all quotas are filled or the last day of the hunting season. All other paid and free deer and turkey hunting licenses go on sale at the license agents beginning August 18.

More information is available on the DNR webstite at www.state.ia.us/dnr, click on fish and wildlife, then click on hunting and wildlife management, and finally click on hunting and trapping.

Doug, I have a question for you. Why is it that the state prevents a resident from purchasing any additional firearm antlerless tags other than special late seasons and special area hunts, if they purchase an Early Muzzleloader tag? Does the state feel the early muzzleloaders have an advantage over the other season hunters? It almost seems like the state discourages residents from the early muzzle season.
