Planting the end of September

I have a couple of areas that I would like to plant rye or maybe wheat next weekend. Would it be too late?? Would like it for any kind of carry over in the winter and the plan is to disc it up and plant BW in the late spring. Should I plant or wait and just plant the BW in spring. Also, is it ok to have lime spread over the rye in early spring?
Thanks for the insight….

I've seen both wheat and rye planted as late as early November down my way. It won't make much of a food plot but it will grow.

Late September is early enough to get some growth and yes...spread the lime over top...won't hurt the rye a bit.
