DNR Relaxes Fishing Regulation at Two Northwest Iowa Lakes

LAKE VIEW, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is relaxing the fishing regulations covering Little Clear Lake in Pocahontas County and Pickerel Lake in Buena Vista County from Feb. 23 through March 14, due to critically low levels of dissolved oxygen.

While the majority of lakes in Iowa still have dissolved oxygen levels high enough to sustain fish, Little Clear Lake and Pickerel Lake, which both have an average depth of three to four feet, have dissolved oxygen of less than 1 part per million. Fish generally need dissolved oxygen levels at more than 5 parts per million.

The Iowa DNR monitors the dissolved oxygen levels in the public lakes around the state during the winter. In winters such as this, thick snow cover on top of the ice can block sunlight and keep photosynthesis from taking place causing dissolved oxygen levels to drop and fish populations to stress. This is a natural occurrence and is more common in shallow lakes.
The promiscuous fishing designation allows anglers to salvage and utilize these imperiled fish populations. Under promiscuous fishing, anglers with a valid fishing license may take fish by any means except by use of dynamite, poison, electro shocking devices, or any stupefying substances. In addition, daily bag and minimum length restrictions are lifted.

Promiscuous fishing does not allow for the taking of fish for commercial purposes. It is also against the law to move fish from one public body of water to another.
