Timber Stand Improvment

Good video Skip, I like the deer bedded part, he looked scared (must have got pushed) by slug hunters (LOL)

Here’s 2 funny parts there....
I had no idea I was being filmed with “have u ever seen Fire Marshall Bill?!?” Or when my buddy said “that looks like a perfect bedding spot”. So I said “agree, I’m taking a nap” & then camera walked up.

Second funny part.... one of guys came up with “habitat guy” but I asked em “I really wanna be Skip Sligh Little Buck Guy!”.... I’ll do some segments on importance of shooting older bucks, especially with small racks (management bucks or old bucks period that r maxed out or are super aggressive) & I’d love to show off my 100” 5 year old. :). I might get a name change next fall!!

Did some sawing today, just did weed tree removal, hackberry ash elm and mulberry are thick with n the understory of these big bur oaks. Left the dogwood but cut everything else. Double girdled some but dropped most, little hinging in pockets. Good stuff! I’ll be doing more this weekend. Holding off on cutting any oaks since it's kinda getting late - probably be ok but honestly in this area there isn't even enough oaks to worry much about crop tree release. That'll be another day down the road a couple years

Any thoughts about how to tackle these as far as TSI? The ridges are mainly oak and the creek bottoms have some walnuts and these multi trunk trees - what are they and are they good ones to cut to open the canopy? Also, what's the latest you could do TSI on junk trees? Thanks!

My advice.....call your local state forester before you cut anything.

Cluster trees look like big basswood trees. OK to cut if competing with better stuff. Your white oak ridges look AWESOME! Some stuff to cut but not a ton. Looks like some black oaks on the left.... and then cut the dead and extremely crooked stuff I see. Hard to tell the rest.

Call your local forester... its FREE!!

Will definitely give them a call! Do they come out and walk the property with you and help mark trees or what do they do?

yes they will walk the property with you and help develop a timber management plan based on your individuals goals. They will help you identify species and give advice. They may mark some (or you mark) trees for future reference if you ask, but don't count on them marking all trees.

Did a bunch of weed tree removal again today. Our timbers are bur oak and a few have some walnuts. That’s it for “good” hardwoods. Tons of hackberry, elm, ash, and mulberry overtake the understory in a heartbeat of allowed. This timber we did our first TSI project in about 10yrs ago. We thinned oaks and opened the canopy. It needed touched up again bad!

I did some heavy edge feathering along this timber two or three years ago. Deer love it!

Wondering how you are taking care of your Hackberry, double girdle, dropping them, herbicides, hinging?

All of the above except treating them. They will all likely sprout again from their stumps and will need recut in another 10yrs... as I was cutting today I wondered if I should try treating them!

I treated about half of what I have done so far. In areas I for sure wanted them dead ,I treated them. Amazing I didn't realize how many Hackberry I have, until I started cutting them.
