Too many balsam!!!!

Ian

New Member
I bought 75 acres 2 years ago
I started habitat work about a year ago
My property is over loaded with balsam fir
Our winters are pretty harsh at times where I am
Should I remove the balsam?
Maybe leave patches here and there for thermal cover?
The area I would like to transform is perfect for food plots and good bedding
But it's over grown with balsam
My property is almost 65% balsam fir

Welcome Ian. Maybe some of the northern watchers can chime in. Opening up some spots should help with more native food. We deal with eastern red cedar down here that way. Try to imagine leaving some windbreak and security spots.

Thank you and thanks for the reply
I have some cedar
Very large trees tho
The deer yard up pretty good here in the winter
Should be expecting good action late November and even better during the December hunt

Where is location?

Where is location?
I'm about 2 hours east of Sault Ste Marie Ontario
On the north shore of lake Huron
So basically I am the unlucky property
All the properties around me got bigger trees and more hardwood
It was cut about 15 years ago
it's mostly balsam and small poplar
The poplar is about 3in or less and there spaced probably a foot
Just pecker poles everywhere
Extremely hard to hinge cut
I don't even bother trying to hinge them anymore
Just cut them down
Thin it out as best I can
I do have good areas
Some hardwood, lots of beech by the creek
But holy balsam lol
