Youth season help.

What weapons are legal to use during the early youth season for my 8-year-old?

Any firearm that is legal during the 1st or 2nd "shotgun" season. Basically straight walls, shotguns, muzzleloader along with archery equipment. The new regs won't be out til August 15 so any new legislation that passed won't be out til then

Don't know the rules of Iowa as I'm a Minnesotan.
But whatever it takes, get some youngsters started!!!
And DON'T tell them to shoot, not shoot a certain deer!!!!!

Let them decide.

Iowa should should legalize crossbows for the youth season! They are easy to shoot and don’t kick. Great starter for youngsters.

Iowa shot not legalize crossbows for kids in the youth season as it is just a way to hook kids on them and then get crossbows (aka crossguns) added to the regular bow season.

Plenty of options out there. I've had mine as young as 8 with a .50 cal MZ. Just dialed the powder way back.
Teaches the kids to make an ethical shot, as they only get one chance at it.

The only thing I remind my kids, is that time in youth season is limited. I split my time between hunting with both kids, and my wife, plus wanting to hunt myself. They also choose to play soccer or run CC during the fall which impacts time in the field as well.
