    Switchgrass

I heavily frost seeded CIR switch late last winter in several areas that I had kept weed and vegetation free all summer/fall. I sprayed with at least 4 quarts atrazine as well late last spring. A few areas are beautiful solid stands of three foot high switch and a couple appear to solid stands...

    Switchgrass

The best price I have found ever is Enrst Seed Co out of Meadvill, PA. (ernstseed.com or (800) 873-3321). Their prices have gone up in 2017. CIR and Kanlow are both $8/lb. In 2016 it was only $5/lb. Good luck!

    Switchgrass

I have a several large areas in my CIR plantings where foxtail took hold during the establishment phase and continues to persist. The CIR stands range from 2 to 4 years old now. One can see CIR plants sporadically scattered in these problems areas and burning is not an option as this point...

    Acorns to Oaks!

Back in fall of 2013 I bought some DCO acorns here in SE Nebraska and planted three or four in a six-inch circles in a long row, hoping at least one in each circle would germinate. I had the cleared/sprayed the ground before planting, so in the spring I'd have a good idea where to look for the...

Sunflowers in early fall food plot mix?

Has anybody included sunflowers in their early fall food plot mixes. When I have planted them in the spring the deer tend to decimate them. I was considering putting them in a mix with forage peas or soybeans and possibly crimson clover.

    Tree Planting

Trees in pots If you have the space and pots I think it can be of great growth benefit for some trees. A few years ago I was able to purchase several hard plastic original style root-maker pots from a small nursery. Based on recommendation from the seller, over the past several springs I have...

Roundup Ready Corn & Soybean Food Plot

Late summer soybeans with crimson clover I am wanting to plant a small (1/4 acre) early season attraction plot in close proximilty to what I consider one of my "destination plots." I have access to a lot of free soybean seed this fall and was considering mixing in crimson clover to extend the...

    Burnt ridge apple trees

I too have ordered a lot of fruit trees from Stark and have been very pleased with the quality and condition of the trees received. I would not recommend spending the extra $ for what they call a "supreme" tree though. They also have an excellent policy for replacing any trees that don't...

    mock rub/scrape trees

Waiting in line. While the ash has received some attention this fall, they really do like the cedar best.

    mock rub/scrape trees

Yes, there is lots of timber (cedars, ash, cottonwood. hackberry, etc). However, if I recall correctly he selects open areas along heavilly used trails and near food plots. He roughs them up with a wood rasp initially, so I have no doubt it's the visual attraction at first. Once one deer rubs...

    mock rub/scrape trees

Interesting note on the Basswood trees. I know we have them in Lincoln as ornamentals, but I had to do a little research to see if they were native to Nebraska. I guess they are along the eastern border along the Missouri River, but probably not in my area. I wish they were because this is...

    mock rub/scrape trees

I planted these faux rub trees in late Sep and can't believe how much attention they've received so far. While our deer numbers here in eastern NE are still way down from EHD die-offs in 2011 and 2012, I am pleased see that in a 6-day stretch, no less than 7 to 8 different bucks use these (no...
