Building a E-Bike for hunting- low cost example...

This is just a self filmed part 1. Just a quick example. I wanted to see if I could build one for low cost that was powerful enough to climb hills & stuff without peddling. I love having bike for long walks..... no sweating & fast access to spots. I don’t use em cause I’m lazy or out of shape but for killer access- they are great. If anyone likes the idea & wondering if u could get by with cheaper ones- DIY - can be done. I would probably do the mid drive vs the hub drive. Stock hub drives suck!!! But this one does a good job as it’s a super beefed up. If funds are no issue - lot of great pre-made mid drive options out there. For guys on budget- can be done....
This was a donor that got new motor, controller & battery.....

Just an FYI to everyone in regards to e-bikes, there has been a lot of legislation proposed in the past two years. Some of it has to do with e-bikes on public ground and bike trails etc. It seems that the move is to limit the wattage on the motor to 750w. I'm not sure what the wattage is on Skip's bike other than "a lot more power". I think as long as you stay on private ground the wattage limit isn't a factor. I didn't follow the legislation so I don't know what did or didn't pass.

I'm sure the same rules process is going on for western states as well.

Skip, did you purchase an old electric bike and refurb it or start with a plain fat tire bike? What did you have in it for cost?

This thing was a gutless turtle. I think I got the bike for a few hundred bucks??? Used and totally gutless sissy-mobile the way it was. Even the “new” 750w hub bikes I have tried on hills- junk.
this one actually has a 750w motor. But- when u ramp up the controller & batteries- this combo vs the toy controllers & batteries on new bikes - HUGE upgrade. I don’t know exactly how they end up comparing. Maybe this is a “true 750w of power” when u give it everything - maybe more - not sure. For mid drives - I’ve seen like 1000 to 2000w ones - which are insane. Here’s my thing though- all I want is torque & high speed is no concern to me. I maybe go 10mph at most. I ran this on gravel & it did like 22-23mph or so. But no need to ever go that fast. 5-10mph & ability to take hills is all I need. This takes hills with ease. I think total cost with donor bike was like $1100-1200-ish. & now I can fix anything on my own if anything breaks.

& correct- I will not be driving by u anytime soon on public land ;). But if 750w was the max - no one will have an issue with that limit. I know it’s a minority that need or want an ebike. For those that do- it can be done cheap.

My personal guide is getting tired of carrying me up and down the mountains in Clayton County. And by tired I mean too old so I've been thinking about one of these but man the new ones are pricey. If a guy could find a clapped out fat tire bike and convert it to electric it might be more cost effective, or not.

Or if you want a turnkey, out-the-door ready-to-go bike- we have 2021 model 750 watt mid-drive bikes here in stock brand new with warranty for $1799
Honestly - I would go that route!!!! I spent some time on my bike & I’m not much lower than that. That bike has a superior mid drive + a warranty.

Well, if Canada doesn't open up I'll need to spend the money somewhere. Will it pull a 150 pound flip over shelter across the ice?

Yes, i have people using them to haul out deer on trailers, haul big steel ladder stands deep into public or even to haul people.

I have been looking at them on ebay. 1500w. Big tires 7 speed. 1200 bucks think there any good??

The only question I have is how do you ride this bike in the morning completely dark with a bow. I really never felt comfortable with a bow rack and my bow bouncing around in the holder. What are the options. I feel riding one handed is asking for trouble. Any feedback would really help out because I would really like to have one

I put my bow either on a pack on my back or in the saddlebags on the back rack - bow is stable and have both hands to control the bike
