2021 Trapline

Figured I would make a thread. Since tagging out early my kids have fallen in love with trapping which has reignited and old passion I had growing up. We started out opening weekend just putting out a few dog proofs for coons and were gonna add to the line when stuff primed up a bit. Ever since this past spring, when I just made an offhand comment while beaver trapping saying "I hope we don't catch an otter now", my 5 year old has been obsessed. Always talks about trapping an otter, checks out books at school about otters or animal books with otters in them so I decided I'd make a few sets for them, but had never caught one before. We caught a few coons and a week ago I put out 2 cross-overs. The excitement on his face and pure joy when he walked up and saw an otter in his 220 trumped my bow buck. He was mad he didn't get to shoot it and even more mad I'm not letting him mount it. He will be happy when it is done getting tanned and he can hang it up in his room. He is eaten up with trapping and I'm doing my best to fuel that fire. Also ended up with an incidental rabbit that for some reason he thought he was gonna just hang out with. Had to give a lesson in taxidermy vs dead animal that night.

Awesome, sure brings back memories of my obsession of trapping when I was young. I actually set a few mink traps this week, too many around. Might set for coyote, fox and coon yet? Love it when the youngsters take part, the smiles say it all.

Great post. Love the excitement. Sometimes I think I need to look at these pursuits through the eyes of a kid again.

Awesome sauce!! Those are life long memories there!

Dead animal vs. Taxidermy - Classic !
Love to see kids still getting exposed to nature and wildlife!

Awesome getting the kids into trapping. That is a nice otter, sure miss the days they were worth $100.
My best memories are from the trapline with good friends over the years, and skinning for an old country fur buyer.

Love seeing kids getting into trapping like I was, addicting it was for sure.

Keep it going young man! What's next on his list to check off?
Next on the list is a red fox or a coyote. Might hang some snares after deer season but might have to wait til next year for those 2. Until then we will keep running some conibears, do some coon calling and then hit spring beavers when it warms up

Seeing that badger in the snow and cold reminded me of when I got a nice badger a few years back under similar weather conditions. Instead of a conibear, I caught mine in a snare that was set in front of hole going into a little shed on my place. Well I knelt down and cut the snare and set the badger, fully frozen in a threatening pose behind me while I dealt with the damage to the shed that the critter wrought.

After spending several minutes putting things back together I turned to head back to the cabin and scared myself as I encountered, or re-encountered if you will, the menacing badger that for a brief second looked like he was going to attack me! :) I got that one tanned too.

Aint many better pics (natural) then kids with a critter.

I've caught a few badgers. Aint no mistaking those catch circles!

That's an awesome set of pics & posting!!! Wish more folks were doing this!!!!! The array of different animals & success is pretty wild too, congrats!!
