Spot Spraying Question

This weekend I plan to do phase one of a tree planting for next spring. Step 1 I have about 250 spots I need to spot spay where I will plant a bare root seedling next spring.

Each spot spray location is supposed to be about a 3ft radius. The plan says I need 1.5%-2% glyphosate mixture. I'm not great at ratios, but google tells me I need 2-4 oz of gly per gallon of water to get that 2% gly mixture.

Assuming that is correct, my bigger question would be recommendations on how many gallons do you think I should put in my backpack sprayer to cover about 250 spot sprays?

I'm thinking about 1 to 1.5 gallons should be good?

Good idea. Ratios etc really fog my brain, just over thinking it.

Its a backpack sprayer..... just fill it up.

Unless i did the math wrong a 3 foot circle should be 9.42 sq feet. So 9.42 x 250 = 2355sq feet to be sprayed about 1/20 of an acre so your 1-1.5 gallons would be about right.

I'd suggest you spray the line where you want to plant the trees. Not just each spot if planting in rows. Limits competition for moisture and sun. If you have a small tank sprayer that is. If not, spot and make sure to mow, mow, mow first 5 years or so.

2oz per gallon of quality H2O is more than plenty of using 41 percent glyphosate. Be less if you use the 54 percent stuff.

I don’t know why but 1/4 cup gly per gallon makes more sense in my head. A 1/4 cup is 2 oz.

Dry AMS makes glyphosate work better. In my four gallon sprayer I use about 6 ounces dissolved directly into water. Thats about four tablespoons per gallon. I think there is a liquid version but I have never used it.

If you are just spraying grass don’t worry about AMS. Gly works good on grasses.

Got it done yesterday. 250 spot sprays. This is a tree planting in a couple different spots along a low laying creek area that has a lot of dead ash etc. So trying to reestablish some trees/canopy. Just under 5 acres total for this year. Next year is about another 5 acres. So its just sort of random plantings, not in a line, supposed to be about 30ft apart. I put a little marker flag in at each spot. 1.5 gallons of water worked perfectly! This winter I'll go in and basal bark spray multi flora/stump cut honey suckle and double girdle osage orange in the units. Then late March spot spray each spot again, wait two weeks then plant the trees.

Tube.

This is a plan my district forester drew up, so have to follow all the steps to qualify for the cost share. I'd tube them anyways or else any seedling likely would just get browsed. I did a 100 tree planting on my own last spring and still bought tubes and tubed them.
