I know there have been some more deer harvested in last few weeks with gun season. Let’s see some of them fellas!!!

This site is great because people share info, pics and stories. Would love to see some more.

I'll share here...

My Daughter shot a nice mature buck sat night during that cold blast we had.

She is in about every activity possible for a young lady her age but we were able to get out during that front.

We were hunting over a standing bean plot and were in for a treat.

This is a small farm we own which does get gun pressure on the borders but have been seeing some decent bucks late through bow season. We were actually there after a mature narrow 6x6 and he showed up about an hr before dark.

He entered the bean field at about 75 yds and was feeding toward us. She was was on him waiting for a broadside shot. I reassured her we had nothing to be worried about because had good wind and no where he could go.

I noticed some movement out of the side windows of the blind and to my surprise about 160" 10 was on my left about 5 yds from the blind.

Also had good wind but he was close. I leannded back and showed her the buck.
Asked her what she She thought and she said dad! Ya! That 1! Can't say I blame her.

He started to work out In front of us at about 20 yds. The difficulty is hes to close. Hard for her square up on the buck and also hard because of the height of the windows shooting that close.

I reassured her were good. Let him feed out.
Then all hell broke loose. A hot doe hit the field and every buck in the field caught wind and were immediately on her. 100mph deer everywhere. Running, chasing, grunting, gone!. All deer blew up.

We were both let down but I told her " we have time" "they can circle back".

20 mns later does and small bucks started filtering back in.

Few mns later feq more and so on. 5 mns left of legal shooting time and bingo. Hes back.

He's quattering in and tell her to wait. Suddenly some deer get down wind of us and bolt and so does the buck. I tell her to stay on him he might stop. He hits the edge of the field at about 80 yds turns broad side stops and looks back our direction. I say "Hammer Him!!!" Miliseconds later BANG.

I was watching in binos and I think I see a shoulder shot. he jump kicks and and heads into the timber which is down hill off the field so almost imediently out of sight. I saw a stumble and thought he may be down right there.

We wait in the blind about a half hr huddleling around the little Mr heater which was barely keeping up. It was dang cold. Go to look for him and BINGO. not 20 yds off the field.

What a great hunt!!!!!! We will never forget it

oh also forgot. Sat was my birthday. Not a better gift a dad can get!.

When we got home and pulled in the drive
there was about 10 cars in front of my shop.

Oh no surprise party!!! Hung the deer and commensed to party time!!! What a good day!

I’ve been the ultimate slacker this season. I’ll be honest…. I didn’t hunt for myself one time this year. I did go “wildlife viewing” on several occasions with my bow…. Was more for coyotes & just to watch deer & learn some new spots.
I went out about 50 times with kids, buddies to folks in the final stretch of life & hunting. So- it’s been fun.
I did try to hunt for a buck that’s about 100” …. & 99.999% of the time, he’d be a dead deer. Weirdest thing happened, he vanished for pry 45 days. Showed back up & he’s a half rack. Debating if I still try to get him now.
This was the oldest lowest scoring deer we knew of. So- I was jacked. Until 2 things happened…. He went MIA & then my world was crushed….. an older & smaller one showed up and he got shot the 1st night. Someone beat me to him.
Here’s the bomber I was after & then the 45” 8-9 year old that someone else got…. Robbing me of my season!!!! :) ;)
One I was after that went mia and now a half rack…

The greatest deer of the season that would have been my dream buck…. Officially scored at 45”. Previous years put him at least 8-9 yo but he could be over 10.5 years old. TBD.

When I rebound from this deep depression of not getting the 45-incher …. I’ll post up some deer we got this year. As of today…. I am planning on eating THREE tag sandwiches.

On my way out the door to Take my boy Charlie out. I love & am good with just being out there. Charlie is good to hunt on his own but I just wanna sit with him. He’s been after 1 Buck & heading out now!!!! Best wishes to everyone!!!!

I’ve been on the sidelines a lot this year as well trying to get deer for friends that come out. It’s been dismal in our county for numbers and I’m glad to see not many groups or shots fired in my neighborhood. I’m hoping people are showing some restraint and not shooting the small numbers we have left. The herd could definitely use a reprieve and hopefully rebound. I’m in Guthrie County.

That is crazy as Guthrie was once a top ten county and still boasts a fairly high number of antlerless permits. Used to work and hunt that county.

Similar here in Adams county. We’re not shooting any does this year.

My family went into this fall not shooting any does for the 3rd year in a row due to the drop in population. We managed to fill 2 tags. My oldest killed her 3rd deer in 4 years during youth, and I managed to shoot a 3 year old 2nd shotgun in the cold and snow. The brassica plot paid off during shotgun. Every deer we saw was coming or going from the plot, and more deer showed up as the season progressed. It seems like with the lower population the bucks are more run down and busted up coming out of the rut. The deer I shot had 0 fat on it, and the 3 biggest deer on camera all had busted antlers.

Here’s ones on my phone. Bro got biggest one on ks farm. I guessed “191”…. Ended up being 196”& he was 8.5. Some other examples of kids, guests or friends. Lot more like this. Older ripe bucks. Don’t care on score - small to big if they old or a buck that’s ripe that someone would be thrilled to chase.
Bro that got KS buck… first time hunting in 4 seasons since he dealt with cancer stuff that almost killed him. So that was nice to see him back at it after years on sidelines. Got some more old bucks off the ks…. Ones without tags as they do electronic tagging there. Age class is super impressive in ks & some happy kids got some that needed to go.
I didn’t hunt 1 time for Myself this year. I went out pry 50 times but it was to sit with kids or old timers or just to “watch” or shoot coyotes. All good- still really enjoyed it!!
I’m spoiled & blessed but our season was brutal in IA. Way down vs normal. Still some great times.
