Tough day on the farm. Lost 2 good bucks

Had a rough day working on the farm this week. Found 2 bucks that got locked up and died. Turns out one was my number 1 target for this past year and the other was my best up and coming 3 year old. Always a chance it happens and sucks when it does. I passed the big guy a couple times last year durning gun season when he was a 6x5. Now I know why they went missing mid November and it wasn’t chasing does into another county.

Been there, sorry to hear it.

Wow, that’s a bummer. I found 4 dead deer (3 bucks, 1 doe) last weekend in one small area while changing cell cam batteries. Presumably from disease. One was a very nice 3 year old.

About a month ago I got 3 photos in a food plot during the middle of the day. It was about 10 degrees and blowing hard so I immediately thought it was odd that all 3 photos showed the bucks fighting. I told my wife that I thought they were locked up & about an hour later I hit the road with my father in law & two of the kids. It took about 45 minutes but we finally found them locked up super tight in a patch of locust trees.

The next 20 minutes were a complete rodeo. They must have just gotten locked up because they traveled 0.68 miles in a dead run & locked together. My expectations for getting them separated quickly changed. I assumed they wouldn't like our presence but I had no idea they'd be capable of traveling like that. We finally caught up to them in the pickup and got them cut off. After a bunch of repositioning and waiting for the perfect opportunity I was able to use a 350 legend to shoot one side off of the younger buck. My first attempt I wiffed. The real trick was being about 40-50 yards away, timing it where they weren't moving, but then also having to factor in that my 350 legend is 3" high at 100 yards.

My son was a mess because he thought for sure they were both dead. It wasn't until he got to scoop up the antler I shot off that he finally calmed down & realized they were going to be ok. Getting them back on trail camera 4 days later was definitely the highlight!

I wish yours had a similar outcome, that sucks!

I’m seriously not at all questioning what you did and definitely would have done the same thing! Were you at all wondering what the DNR would have done if they saw you aiming a gun at the deer?? Again, not questioning anything! It’s awesome what you did! I would have done the same thing 10/10 times!! Just wondering if you ever questioned it.?Crazy how the obvious thing to do gets questioned/critisized at times. You did the right thing and i think 99% of us on here woulda done the same. Were you at all worried what have happened if a C/O saw you aiming a gun at two bucks?? I wouldn’t have been either

I think the intent and result speak for itself even if, by some random chance, an officer was watching. Your choices are shoot a side off, get close with saw and maybe get gored or let them die. Easy choice. Officer or not.

It’s along the lines of everyone makes a video of the assault with their phone instead of helping. Jump in do the right thing without pause. Brett did!

I think it's a fair question. We videoed almost the entire thing for that exact reason. I tried to upload the video of them locked together but I couldn't get it to work. I took a hand saw & a bunch of rope thinking that would be the method. I just happened to throw in the rifle at the last second & was very thankful I did because they were very close to the river when I finally got them separated.
