Newbie - Please Recommend a Planter

Hi Gang, I've never used a planter but am considering picking one up. Primarily for beans or corn. Saw this on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/share/1LWfcPmQXY/

I wouldn't be planting more than a few acres. Would appreciate ya'lls thoughts & recommendations on something to look for. I don't mind something requiring handy-work but want to make sure parts are readily available. Thanks.

If your doing beans and corn get some version of the John deer 7000. That drill wont do much of a job on corn and you will need a cultipacker or roller after if your doing beans.

PH outdoors G 5 no till drill. Does beans and corn great. For some reason they removed the small seed box. If you do brassicas or clover a carrier is needed which isn’t a big deal.

I found out the hard way about lift capacity. 3046 deer would not lift a genesis 5 even though specs say it will. 30 series Deere tractors do not have the capacity. 40 series will handle it fine but I recommend leaving the loader on unless working on flat ground.

For those of you who use the G5, how big of a tractor do you use to pull it? What would you consider minimum HP, and what would you consider the "sweet spot"?
I have used my G5 with a LS 40HP...but it is on the ragged edge. I bought a New Holland 60 HP and it handles it very well. While you could possibly get away with something in the 40HP range...I would recommend something bigger.

Gate 0. Gear .6
Brassicas - my crib notes say I planted brassicas last year on 08-08-25 at: Gate = 0.1, gear = 2.1 and depth at 1/2". Soil was damp, almost too wet. Felt like that was too heavy. Stand was OK.

Planted three other places on 08-15-25 at: Gate = 0.1, gear = 1.6 and depth at 1/2". Soil was fit and those were good stands, maybe a tick heavy.

Extrapolating between IBH above and myself...we are really close on the gate setting and I am still a little heavier on the gear...so I may go with something like a 1.0, maybe lower, and see what I think.
