    Alfalfa???

Also toying with it for this fall.. - Alfalfa loves calcium. Make sure your pH is in a good range 6.2+ before trying to plant it. - Loves full sun. More drought resistant than clover. - My neighbor has a few 2-3 acre fields of it, and the deer keep it trimmed for him. Hasn't baled it in a...

    Missouri cancels late season

Ok, I'll take the bait... :) Politics: Missouri's Park Bill is up for its 10 Year Renewal this year. If too many people are mad about culling, MDC is scared straight this renewal will not pass. MDC gets a big portion of funding from this bill. By hitting "pause" on the deer slaughter...

Edge Feathering / Switchgrass Field Buffer Project - In Photos

Late winter discing will set the grass back, and open up the canopy compared to burning. The result would be a higher diversity of forbs, etc. as well as brooding cover for poults, etc due to a more open ground the first year. I'm not sure NWSG grass stands can be too thick for deer but...

Edge Feathering / Switchgrass Field Buffer Project - In Photos

Feb 13, 2026 Last view of the low edge before putting a drip torch to it.. Rolled a head fire through the switchgrass, and used a backing fire underneath about 30 yards into the timber below. Happy with the results. Can really see how abrupt the transition is between field and woods...

    Tax on Switchgrass seed?

No tax, I generally purchase from Albert Lea Seed. Don't pay at local Ag Services either due to farm use.

Too early to frost seed clover?

Yes, yes, yes. Small clover seeds tend to frost seed the best. All good options: - Alice - Ladino - Reds

Too early to frost seed clover?

But great reminder! I just ordered a 25# bag of Ladino so I will have to use here soon.

Too early to frost seed clover?

I say yes, too early. My best stands have always come with frost seeding in late winter in Mid MO. Anytime during the month of march seems to be perfect every year. I don't know what it is, maybe the seed sprouts on some "Indian summer" days in Jan/Feb and then another long, late cold spell...

    Switchgrass

Can use a drill for any switch variety, doesn't have to be a NWSG drill or box. Switch is one of the only NWSGs that doesn't have parachutes on it.. Flows through like rape or a small clover seed.

    Switchgrass

Rates can vary based on use of the field (wildlife vs screening, etc) as well as planting method. 10 lbs/acre is good for broadcast + packing. If drilling, I'd go a lower rate for wildlife, maybe 5-6lbs / acre. If using for screening, I'd be drilling 8 lbs / acre.

    Peas for foodplot

Spring peas / Field Peas may not last the summer heat, depending on where you're at. Weed control will be your biggest issue with field peas. They are a cool season plant, so you may lose the field come summer. Other options could be to mix / drill spring wheat in with the peas to help with...

    Let’s talk arrows

Agree 100%. This weight range is a good blend of lethality and trajectory. Pick what works best for you. Another thing that is overlooked at times is arrow diameter. Smaller diameter arrows tend to be more forgiving for pass through and wind drift. Handy for those shooting lower KE setups.

    I need my own property....

How are the neighbors? Given the small size, will you have opportunities to purchase more around you in the future? Never know, but number of surrounding tracts can up the opportunity.

    Soil Test

Yes, here is one from a few years ago, wanted to see what they gave. The information is very limited. Just macro level nutrients tested. Nothing for buffer PH, base saturation percentages, nothing for Sulfur which is a big miss for the macro level.. If you're just looking for PH and...

Edge Feathering / Switchgrass Field Buffer Project - In Photos

Jan 18, 2026 Review of marked timber shows fairly hard edge between woods and field. Even fairly larger stuff (with limited to no timber value) marked. Quite a few cedars have encroached the field with time. As many know, cedars are a pioneer species, often indicating what was once a...

    Timber Stand Improvment

I'd encourage you to get a forester to mark TSI for you. This will guide you on what is marketable, or safe to take. Then if you have the time, resources to self perform then go for it. Agree with the above, go to town. Deer will return quickly.
