Maybe nothing but you might get yourself into a situation you could really regret.
I feel prescribed fire is an important part of habitat management but I have fought many wildfires that started when landowners with no fire experience tried to...
We have a similiar situation Paul, our farm is in a good area because of the relative lack of hunting pressure which helps us grow quality bucks but at the same time the lack of hunting pressure makes it difficult to have a big impact on our doe population. It seems like every year we start the...

Farmland had good luck drilling beans into rye and wheat and then just leaving the grain standing.
Kinda looked like the deer didn't like getting their eyes poked on the straw and left it alone.

That was unintentional but it did have some interesting results ... we...

my farm has several gullies, some are pretty canyon-like ... So I have had this idea for a couple of years now of getting some throwaway concrete culvert sections and getting them down in the bottom of the gullies somehow and then filling in over the top of them. It would be like...

I burned the CIR last spring and noticed that the canary grass was greening up a couple weeks ahead of the CIR so I hit some of it with roundup ... I am thinking of burning it again this spring and using that couple week window to toast the rest of the canary grass ...

Reed canary grass is a tough one to deal with ... I was involved in an ongoing study the Missouri Dept. of Conservation that is trying to determine the best way to get rid of reed canary grass ... no legal chemical on the market works well at completely eradicating it. The best results came...

I have spent the last couple weeks working for a client on a TSI project that basically consisted of killing chinese elm and amur honeysuckle that were invading an oak stand. Terrible time of the year to work but it was a job I couldn't turn down. Working on this project was yet another...

I'm curious what Farmland QDM has to say about "buck brush" since they are burning...does it encourage it or let other more benificial forage come in?
I suppose he's goofin off...deer huntin' or something...

Can you plant it too thick? I am using it to help block vision of my plot. One for my exit and entrance to the stand and so the neighbors cant stop and gawk at any deer might be eating before dark. Looks like it really cant be too thick.

My problem is that my farm borders a 500 acre tract of public river-bottom ground that would go up like a gas soaked sponge if any embers from my timber burn got to it. There is really no way to make a fire break between the two because of steep areas and creeks.

I have never noticed a difference in tick population after a burn but I would think at least a few would get toasted. Early spring burns when the ticks are closer to the soil would probably have less impact than a late spring burn when they are out looking for a meal.
As for burn timing, you...
I'm glad we converted you Paul ... burning timber should be a part of any whitetail plan, it's one management practice that can have a very positive impact for all wildlife and it's the cheapest, most effective foodplot out there ...if you don't burn down your neighbors farmhouse

Old Buck ... I like native persimmon and american plum. A variety is great but sometimes it is easier to grow what grows here naturally. Your farm is on the northern edge of the persimmon range but I know of at least one farm north of yours they are growing well on.
As far as how to get them...
I would say the NR tag factor is a big part of it but the ag value of land is less in NE Missouri compared to Iowa and the MO gun season limits the landowners ability to produce large bucks.
When I worked in MO I found that landowners were not really seeing much return on QDM efforts unless...
You're right Duckaholic ... if you raise money in Iowa and spend it on projects in Canada it can help waterfowl hunting in Iowa ... that's why I am a member of DU ... but I also know it is difficult to get funding approved to do local projects even if it is money that was raised locally ... I...
Two things to consider Ghost ...
a TSI for wildlife maybe a little different than a TSI for timber value and the DNR Foresters sometimes have a hard time seeing the wildlife TSI potential ...
and don't bite off more than you can chew, 20 acres of TSI is alot of work, we signed up for 40 acres...
