    Otter problems?

We live 2 miles from the Des Moines and less than a mile from 2 creeks that feed into the Des Moines. We are already working on a box trap. The ole' boy that figured it out is an old school outdoorsman and he hates them. He said they are pound for pound the meanest animal in the state...

    Otter problems?

Anyone ever have otter problems? Last summer I saw what a swore was a fisher cross the road when I was taking a walk. I never even dreamed it would be an otter. A good friend was fishing our pond and he thinks an otter has been raiding the pond because the quality has declined and I think I saw...

    3D shoot thread?

Could we get one going? Wapello Chiefs have a primitive shoot this weekend May 30-31. Wapello Chiefs have a regular shoot next week June 6-7. I used to shoot several each summer and need to get back in groove. We used to go to Derby, Montezuma, Sigourney, Pella. Do any of these groups still...

    Whats your Camo.?

I buy mostly Natural Gear for the fit and function. I found some good stuff at Wal Mart years ago but not anything the last few years.

    Crop rent thoughts?

Our Mahaska county farm averages 72-76 CSR2 with the poor land enrolled in CRP so it is easy to farm. What is everyone expecting for 2026 crop rent rates? Pretty much unimproved with only the best field tiled and terraced. We run around $213

Buffer Strips - Habitat and Water

I struggle a bit with operators who lean on that excuse. This is just my thought process around that line of thinking: We just enrolled 20% of our farm in 2025 above the rental rate. I understand it is a variable amount based on county rental rates, environmental risk etc. All operators accept...

    Early rut

All this seems relevant. I still think cell cams allow us the real time data to come to these conclusions. I wonder if the breeding dates have always shifted every so often but we never had the data available for us to analyze? Not sure the "expert" university or government studies are ever...

    The Winter Cold

Hope your gun seasons are going well. I share the same thoughts as the years click off. Our little one is now 17 and we are dreading the move to college in just under 2 years. Enjoy the little ones and the magic they bring to fall and the holidays...it goes by so fast. Time is a thief...

Latest from my FSA office as of Dec 1

Interesting twist to this story. Called today and they said funds we released to us Dec 12. Checked bank and nothing. We put everything in a trust in 2022 but our bank accounts, even though under the trust, have our names and not the trust. Because of this, it got kicked back and we will be...

    Deer feed blend?

I just do an old self mix recipe I was told about years ago. (60% all stock (12-14%), 30% whole corn, 10% oats) I do add in a mixed rumen mineral and I add an apple attractant to get it started. Fed from a Boss Buck gravity feeder. Certainly not an expert just doing research and fixing mistakes...
