Nebraska wildlife refuges get $1 million stimulus boost

The U.S. Department of the Interior will provide almost $1 million to Nebraska to support maintenance and energy conservation projects for Nebraska’s wildlife refuges and wetlands as a part of the federal economic stimulus package.

Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson said the funding would be divided among six refuges and wetland areas. The Democrat said the largest share would go to Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, which is receiving $575,000 to replace the West and South Boundary Bison fencing and $500,000 to restore the office building and properly care for artifacts from the old museum.

The U.S Fish and Wildlife Service used a merit-based process to select projects that met the criteria established by the stimulus package.
