Officials investigate 13-mile fish kill in Iowa

FOREST CITY - Environmental officials are investigating a fish kill in north-central Iowa that stretched about 13 miles along the Winnebago River.

The number of fish killed in the incident wasn't immediately available, but officials believed it would be at least several thousand. They say it will include several types of large sport fish including smallmouth bass, northern pike and channel catfish.

Fisheries biologists and other specialists were at the scene on Friday trying to determine the cause.

Environmental officials also released figures on another fish killcaused by a wastewater discharge last week near Eddyville. They say 3,134 fish died on Miller Creek, a tributary of the Des Moines River.

Officials blame a break in a pipe used to carry industrial wastewater.

I spent a lot of time on the WInnebago back in the day. That stretch from Fertile to Mason city is one of the overlooked smallmouth hotspots in Iowa. Caught a few walleye there too.

Are there any more specifics about which 13-mile stretch this is?
