We have a bunch coming up for renewal next year. I have seen no benefit for wildlife at all by enrolling whole farms in it. Definitely need some more food and diversity even if it just holds them on ours for another 15 minutes or so. As soon as they cross that fence there is a blind on a trailer or stand on the fence waiting for them and BOOM! Trying to set a meeting with the NRCS to go over some of our options but definitely going to be putting NHEL back into a crop rotation.

My local office said I cannot make money on it if it’s in CRP contract since I was getting paid… can hunt it all you want, but cannot make money. (I did however buy my last contract out and didn’t renew for other reasons)

I see no place where it says one cannot charge a fee for recreational hunting on crp land.
I've never heard of that. Interesting. Ive seen alot of crp farms come up for hunting leases as well.

I’ve found that the FSA & NRCS make statements that are not always accurate . I call my buddy in Minnesota (he’s a top habitat guy PF/CRP guru) & he will give me the actual legal rule on various questions. I’m 90% sure you can still lease your land if it has CRP !

I called the Monroe County Iowa FSA office on this topic. You can absolutely lease or charge a fee to hunt crp enrolled land be it birds, deer etc. One caveat was no permanent blinds in the crp itself. If a blind is erected for hunting it must be removed after season. That was it.

At one time the crp manual specifically prohibited controlled hunts/preserves. I am pretty sure it has been removed.
Leasing hunting is not prohibited per the crp manual.
Hunting blinds are not specifically mentioned as prohibited. But things like parking equipment is prohibited on certain crp practices. So maybe the office is taking a conservative approach with hunting blinds.

A Recreational Hunting
CRP participants may lease hunting rights, charge fees for access to hunters, or conduct other
similar hunting operations on CRP acreage if this activity occurs during the normal hunting
season for the pursuit of game that is normal to the area. Hunting must be conducted
consistent with State laws and bag limits for the appropriate game species.

Important: Barrier fencing or boundary limitations that prohibit wildlife access to or from
the CRP acreage is not allowed.
B Commercial Shooting Preserves
Commercial shooting preserves may be operated on CRP acreage if all of the following
apply:
the commercial shooting preserve is licensed by a State agency, such as the State Fish
and Wildlife Agency or State Department of Natural Resources
the commercial shooting preserve is operated in a manner consistent with the applicable
State agency rules governing commercial shooting preserves
CRP cover is maintained according to the conservation plan
no barrier fencing or boundary limitations exist that prohibit wildlife access to or from
the CRP acreage
related CRP cover maintenance, as determined by STC according to FOTG and in
consultation with the State Technical Committee, must:
be performed according to the conservation plan
provide benefit and enhancement to all wildlife normal to the area
