Started picking acorns today - found a bunch of red and pin oaks. Had a hard time finding any white oaks but found some.

Question I had was on this one tree I found - I think it's a chinkapin oak but wanted to see what others thought.

I did get a good batch of acorns off a medium sized swamp white oak in a parking lot of a recently abandoned gas station near work. :D

Then found baseball fields near work that had some nice sized red oaks that were loaded with acorns.

And tons of pin oak trees in the neighborhoods near work but their acorns haven't started dropping real heavy yet.

Went back to the chinkapin tree today and walked around, it hasn't started dropping really heavy yet. I grabbed about 30 acorns.

It is a huge tree and I tried looking up to see if it was loaded yet but couldn't tell. The few acorns I saw on it were green yet and blended in well with the leaves. I'll be watching it every few days and scouting around the city for more unique oaks!

Will these be going into rootmaker trays, or what is the plan Jordan?

Ya, I've only got ten 18 cell rootmaker trays at this point and I've collected way more than I can plant in my rootmakers. I'm messing around with fall planting some of these acorns in tubes that previously had bareroot seedlings in died. Just putting 3 acorns under a tube. We'll see how that does. I just started this doing that this past weekend and will continue doing it through out the fall.

I picked 2 more gallons of swamp white oak acorns over lunch today. There was easily another 10 gallons there. It's a medium sized, but LOADED swamp white oak in a recently shut down parking lock of a Buckey's gas station near work. I needed a broom and shovel to collect them. It was easy with them all laying on the cement.

I've picked about 2 gallons of red oak acorns around a little league complex near work too. There's three medium sized threes there but they are pretty full. Lots of them falling as I was picking.

Anyone need a some acorns to start in root maker containers? PM me.

That swamp white oak may be showing some bur oak characteristics too. Was that leaf pulled in full sun or part shade?

you got a tricky one, that's for sure. Chinkapin, swamp chestnut like above, hmmmm. One thing you mentioned, some trees still holding acorns - I like that characteristic! Especially if you notice deer love em. You gotta love those parks, parking lots & streets loaded with premium acorns ready to shovel up. Great selection & you can shop around pretty easy in any car with a half hour to explore, pretty cheap seed for just paying for gas.
