Additional doe Tags

A friend of mine wants to buy some additional doe tags (in a county that has some available) for the late muzzleloader season. He has already hunted the early muzzleloader and bow seasons. When he went in to purchase the additional doe tags, the sales lady told him he could not purchase additional doe tags for the late muzzleloader season. Does that sound right?

Thanks

I had a similiar question about doe tags. It is my understanding that you can get doe tags (if available) for any season regardless of wether you hunt other seasons.

So if they are tags for that county, you can purchase them and use them w/ a muzzleloader?

The lady was correct. Since you went 1st season muzzy the only doe tags you can get are nov. antlerless(which is over) or Jan. antlerless.

[/ QUOTE ] This also applies to first shotgun hunters if I remember correctly. Also a late muzzleloader hunter can't hunt does first shotgun but can hunt them second season shotgun. It's really hard to understand the rules sometimes.

Late season muzzleloaders can also hunt does during the first shotgun season. Last year they couldn't but this year they could.

[/ QUOTE ] Yep your right, I went back and read it. You can hunt does 1st or 2nd but not both seasons if you hunt late muzzleloader.

I have a couple tags for 2nd season, maybe this time I'll get out there more.

The way I remember this is you can only buy doe tags for the season's you buy your statewide tags for. Only exception are the special Antlerless only seasons which this year were Thanksgiving weekend and After Jan 10th. Then you have to buy your 2006 license early to hunt that one.

If I were to get a vote into how to do these tags next year, they should make the antlerless tags good for any season you buy your state wide tags for. So, if I buy Bow and Shotgun 2, I can buy an antlerless tag that is good for both of those seasons.

Of course that would probably reduce the revenue the DNR would get because I normally only want to shoot 1, but end up buying 2 tags just in case.

On a side note, I'm hearing a lot of guys saying they are shooting a lot of button bucks by mistake during shotgun season. After a couple years of this we'll have to see how the war on Does is costing us some great bucks.

If the bucks that are left are allowed to get some age on them, the war on does won't have cost us any big bucks.

The group I hunted the Nov antlerless season with (and we did drives) shot 1 accidental button out of 18 deer. I admit it's alot more difficult in cold weather to see the difference but still it should not be a huge deal. Not nearly the problem we'll have if we don't control the doe population.

It's a proven fact of human nature that if your antlerless tag was still valid for some later season many would put off filling it for so long it would never get filled, antlerless tags valid for any season would decrease the doe harvest.

I'm not saying make them valid for any season. Only make them valid for the seasons you have a valid statewide tag in.

The way my last 2 bow seasons went, I never was given an opportunity at a doe. Too many pesky small bucks. However during shotgun season, I'll buy 2 tags (Statewide and antlerless). I'd love to be able to take that antlerless bow tag into shotgun season and be able to fill it then.

I then could decide to buy another antlerless if I wanted to do more bow hunting.

The way it sits now, I may not get to fill my Antlerless bow tag. So, if they really want me to fill tags, I'm more apt to fill them if I'm flexible to fill it with 2 methods instead of one at a time at twice the cost.

It's just my opinion and this would fit my hunting style much better than the current way tags are offered.

Seems you would have a higher ratio of sold tags to filled tags going this route.

The DNR feels EXACTLY the same way and we might as well give up on "any season" doe tags.
